Dronten actually sits 5 meters below sea level, and the area was reclaimed in 1957 from what was once the Zuiderzee. The municipality was created later, though, in 1972. A lot of wrecked planes from World War II were found when the area was drained, and many airmen come here to honor and commemerate their fallen friends.
Dronten is actually composed of three towns:
1. Swifterbant: 6,313
2. Biddinghuizen: 6,034
3. Dronten: 25,657
