Putian, formerly known as Xinghua, also known as Puyang or Puxian, is a prefecture level city in Fujian Province. It is located in the central coastal area of Fujian, on the west coast of the Taiwan Strait, adjacent to the provincial capital city of Fuzhou to the north, the historic city of Quanzhou to the south, and the Taiwan Strait to the southeast. It governs one county and four districts with two management committees (Xianyou County, Licheng District, Chengxiang District, Hanjiang District, Xiuyu District, Meizhou Island Management Committee, Meizhou Bay North Bank Management Committee), with a land area of 4200 square kilometers and a sea area of 11000 square kilometers. As of the end of 2022, the permanent population was 3.199 million. Known as the "Seaside Zoulu" and "Famous Literature Nation", it is a historical and cultural city in Fujian Province and has been awarded the title of National Model City (County) for Double Support. By 2022, the regional gross domestic product will reach 311.625 billion yuan.
Putian City has interwoven mountain ranges, undulating hills, intertwined river valleys and ditches, vast and fertile plains, wide and continuous sea areas, as well as many peninsulas, harbors, and islands, forming a complex and diverse grid like terrain. As of 2022, there is a total of 1 provincial entrepreneurship and innovation demonstration center, 2 provincial science and technology enterprise incubators, 9 provincial science and technology enterprise incubators registered, 2 national level co creation spaces, 22 provincial co creation spaces, and 10 municipal level co creation spaces in the city. There are 1386 medical and health institutions at all levels, including 66 hospitals, 50 health centers, and 857 village clinics.
In the second year of Guangda in the Southern Dynasty (568 AD), Putian County was established; After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, Putian and Xianyou counties were successively under the jurisdiction of Jinjiang Special Zone and Minhou Special Zone; In 1971, it was changed to Putian area; Putian was established as a city in 1983.
