Lishui, formerly known as "Chuzhou", is a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Zhejiang Province. Located in the southwest of Zhejiang Province, it borders Wenzhou City to the southeast, Ningde City and Nanping City in Fujian Province to the southwest, Quzhou City to the northwest, Jinhua City to the north, and Taizhou City to the northeast. The terrain is mainly hilly and slopes from southwest to northeast, belonging to the subtropical monsoon climate. Mineral resources include lead, zinc, molybdenum, rare earth, pyrophyllite, fluorite, zeolite, kaolin, etc. The national first-class protected plants include Baishanzu fir, Bole tree, Long beaked Ranunculus and Alisma, Chinese water chestnut, etc. As of 2023, the city covers an area of 17300 square kilometers, with 9 counties under the jurisdiction of Liandu District, Longquan City, Qingtian, Yunhe, Qingyuan, Jinyun, Suichang, Songyang, and Jingning counties. By the end of 2022, the permanent population was 2.515 million, and the city's regional GDP reached 183.087 billion yuan. It is one of the first national ecological civilization demonstration zones, national forest cities, China's climate health town, and China's natural oxygen bar city.
As of 2023, there are 3 well-known schools in Lishui University, 13 secondary vocational education schools, 26 regular high schools, and 3 regular universities. As of 2022, there are 1751 health institutions (including village clinics and clinics) in the city.
Lishui has produced many famous figures throughout history, including the famous poet Ye Shaoweng of the Song Dynasty, the founding hero Liu Ji of the Ming Dynasty, Zhang Naiqi, one of the "Seven Gentlemen" of the Modern Salvation Association, and the Kuomintang politician Chen Cheng. Its Longquan celadon, Longquan sword, and Qingtian stone carvings are known as the "Three Treasures of Lishui". There are 4 tourist attractions in Jinyun Xiandu Scenic Area.
In the ninth year of the Kaihuang reign of the Sui Dynasty (589 AD), Chuzhou was established. In the twelfth year (592 AD), it was renamed Kuozhou. In the first year of the Qianyuan reign (758 AD), it was renamed Kuozhou again. In November of the third year of the Xuantong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1911 AD), the Chuzhou Military and Political Branch was established after the Xinhai Revolution. In June of the 21st year of the Republic of China (1932 AD), the 11th and 12th county political inspection districts were established under their jurisdiction. In April and May 1949, the entire territory of Lishui was liberated. In March 1986, Lishui County was abolished and Lishui City was established
