Jinzhong is a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Shanxi Province, named after its location in central Shanxi. It is situated between the middle section of the Taihang Mountains and the Taiyuan Basin, with the Taihang Mountains to the east and the Fen River to the west. As of the end of 2022, the city's permanent resident population was 3.3945 million. According to the official website in November 2023, it governs 2 districts, 1 city, 8 counties, and 1 national level economic and technological development zone, 101 townships, and 17 streets; The total land area is 16400 square kilometers. Has been awarded three honorary titles, including National Agricultural High tech Industry Demonstration Zone, National Comprehensive Tourism Demonstration Zone, National Public Cultural Service System Demonstration Zone, National Garden City, National Double Support Model City "Five Consecutive Championships", and National Cultural Ecological Protection Zone.

Jinzhong is part of the central area of the Shanxi Central Urban Agglomeration and the core of the Taiyuan Yuci Taigu urban area. It is adjacent to the provincial capital Taiyuan and is less than 10 kilometers away from the Taiyuan Wusu International Railway Station and the South High speed Railway Station.
