Neijiang City, also known as Tiancheng, is a prefecture level city in Sichuan Province, known as the "throat of southern Sichuan" and the "fortress of Bashu". Located in the centers of Chengdu and Chongqing, it borders Chongqing to the east, Zigong and Luzhou to the south, Meishan to the west, and Ziyang 1 to the north. As of April 13, 2022, it has jurisdiction over Shizhong District, Dongxing District, Longchang City, Zizhong County, Weiyuan County, Neijiang Economic and Technological Development Zone and Neijiang High tech Industrial Development Zone, covering an area of 5384.8 square kilometers, with a total registered residence population of 3.988 million (by the end of 2022). The gross domestic product (GDP) of Neijiang City in 2022 was 165.695 billion yuan. The terrain of Neijiang is mainly hilly, surrounded by low mountains in the southeast and southwest. The geological structure belongs to a part of the subsidence zone of the Neogene system, with a small scale of folds and faults. Neijiang belongs to the subtropical humid monsoon climate, characterized by warm winters and early springs, hot summers and rainy autumns, distinct four seasons, abundant rainfall, humid air, rainy and hot seasons, less sunshine, more clouds and fog, and less frost and snow.
As of the end of 2022, there are a total of 960 schools of all levels and types in the city, including 545 kindergartens, 223 primary schools, 123 junior high schools, 40 ordinary high schools, 5 universities, 5 special education schools, and 16 secondary vocational education schools. There are 134 high-tech enterprises, 1 national high-tech industrial development zone, 1 national agricultural science and technology park, 4 national science and technology enterprise incubators, 3 provincial-level science and technology enterprise incubators, 1 national level innovation space, 2 provincial-level innovation spaces, and 2 national level innovation parks in the city. There are a total of 3787 medical and health institutions in the city, including 79 hospitals (58 private hospitals) and 3678 primary medical and health institutions.
In ancient times, Neijiang was a fiefdom of Ziguo during the Yao Dynasty, Liangzhou during the Xia and Shang Dynasties, and Yongzhou during the Zhou Dynasty. In the second year of Wucheng in the Later Zhou Dynasty (560 AD), Zizhou was relocated from Yang'an County to Ziyang County and merged with Zizhong County. In the third year of the Republic of China (1914), Zizhou was abolished. In 1935, during the unification of the Sichuan government, Sichuan implemented an inspection district system. All counties (cities, districts) under the jurisdiction of Neijiang City, except for Longchang City, belong to the Second Administrative Inspectorate of Sichuan Province (with jurisdiction over Zizhong). They were successively liberated from December 5th to 16th, 1949. In November 1989, Neijiang County was abolished and Dongxing District 5 of Neijiang City was established.
