If you ever get the chance to visit a place with a notoriously hot, slimy climate like New Orleans when it's actually cold, take it. I got lucky a few years back to visit New Orleans in the middle of a January cold snap when daytime temperatures were in the 50s and it was getting down into the 30s at night. Being able to walk around New Orleans, and ride streetcars and whatnot, while wearing sweaters and jackets was fantastic.

It is no wonder that the white men and women in Greenville walk with a slow, dragging pride, as if they had taken up a challenge and intended to defy it without end." -- Rebecca West for The New Yorker, 1947
