Ça en dit long.
https://www.tvanouvelles.ca/2021/05/...la-route-158-1

There was a movement about 20 years ago when Richard passed away to rename the highway and it never came to fruition.

I would be surprised if they did it now. Most highways are named after politicians, not hockey players.

I think naming it for Guy Lafleur is a pretty good bet.

Maurice Richard wasn't really a good fit, except for the fact that it's the 50 and he was the first to score 50 goals in 50 games.

Richard only played for Montreal teams, was from Montreal and had no relationship to our regions.

Other than maybe a few games he may have played against the Junior Senators before he made the jump to the NHL.

The Autoroute Guy-Lafleur makes way more sense. Of course there is the number 50 for him too.

Lafleur was from Thurso and the highway links the Outaouais and his hometown to Montreal where he had all of his greatest achievements.

You are correct that most autoroutes are named for politicians though the A-40 is named for singer-songwriter Félix Leclerc.

Don't get me wrong, I would love the 50 named after Lafleur. I guess it will be up to Premier Eyebrows to make it happen.

Premier Eyebrows? First time I've heard that one.

François Legault is big on Québécois pride so I wouldn't be surprised at all if he made this happen.

Along with Céline Dion, Guy Lafleur is the biggest Quebec icon of the past 4-5 decades.

I actually thought I saw a sign saying “l’Autoroute Guy Lafleur” on my way back from taking photos. It was near the beginning of the divided section (heading west).

According to my belle-soeur who came to visit this weekend, a large part of the 50 is closed and detoured onto the 148 right now.

:/

I think they are rebuilding a stretch by Thurso where there are springs that are constantly wrecking the road, but I may be wrong.

I am not joining a facebook group of mouth-breathers to find out.
