Congratulations to Team Rosenberg (@JRStudio_news) for their successful proposal. Construction of phase 1 of the redevelopment will start in 2019-2020.
(that was the one with the bonfire)

The winning concept for the Nepean Point redevelopment, entitled Big River Landscape, submitted by Janet Rosenberg & Studio Inc. with Patkau Architects, Blackwell Structural Engineers, and ERA Architects Inc., was approved by the NCC Board of Directors.

Wasn't my favourite design but it seemed the most typical Ottawa, the most NCC friendly and the most safe. I'm not sure if this will make Nepean Point a destination.

My thoughts:
1. The bridge is the best executed of all the designs. Hopefully they don't value engineer the elegant design out of the bridge.
2. The amphitheater is pointing in the right direction. Not sure about wood elements in a long-term build but that's maybe just me. The presenter at the NCC info night said it was a new type of engineered wood well suited for this purpose.
3. I like the bonfire detail.
4. All of the presentations were lacking in some way. What this leaves out as far as 'wow' at the actual statue, it more than makes up for with its nice bridge.

I can't recall, is this the one that will remove all the dirty backfill and return the statue to it's original grade at bedrock?

I'm okay with this choice, and it's certainly an improvement over what's there, but I agree, I don't think this has the wow factor to make Nepean Point a destination.

I was downtown with my girlfriend last night and I decided to show her Nepean Point. There was actually a good amount of people around the statue and the grass behind it. More than I have ever seen there before. Maybe I’m making a bad guess but it seems like the Tavern on the Hill is helping bring more people to that corner of Major Hill’s Park and in turn Nepean Point. Of course, it was a Friday so maybe that was it! But It makes me excited to see the final product when the bridge helps connect the point to the park. Though I wish there was a bit more to the winning bid.

When does the redevelopment get going?

I doubt the tavern has anything to do with it, Nepean Point has always been a draw on its own as you’d be hard pressed to find a nicer vantage point in the city. plus it still requires a bit of effort getting there from the Tavern without a convenient crosswalk.

Before the Gallery was built, the site had the city’s prime tourist parking lot. A good number of visitors the went up to Champlain’s statue before they even got to Parliament Hill. As awesome as the Gallery is, it has isolated the Point since it was built. I think that planned footbridge from Major’s Hill will mitigate this especially if it links up Lady Grey Drive which has great potential to be a pedestrian terrace/promenade towards Rideau Falls

Feels like this project has taken forever to get going. I really like the design though!

This is the first time I have seen the video concept for the winning bid. Absolutely epic and I hope to see it come to fruition!!! I love everything about it. The Anishinabe Scout echoing Champlain, the Gathering circle firepit, the River view...it's all so perfect to me.

Very nice!
If I'm reading the site correctly the summer 2020 date is for the demo only?
No dates yet on when they are doing the actual work?

When they redo Alexandra would it be a good idea to reflect the same style of bridge as the pedestrian bridge? Tie the whole area together? Or is that just not feasible or appropriate design wise?

Yeah, how long before someone drops a rock or a brick off that pedestrian bridge into oncoming traffic?

About the same length of time it takes for people to drop rocks or bricks off literally every other bridge.

Do you regularly see people dropping rocks off other bridges?

The project looks promising. I'm a little worried that the taiga garden will end up resembling the Nature Museum's boreal garden. Each time I take visitors there they ask why the area around the museum has been abandoned. I need to explain to them that this is planned abandonment.
It does make that part of town look somewhat sketchy. I sincerely hope that it won't be the same case with the taiga garden...right in the heart of the city.

I'm sure the bridge will look nothing like on the renders after NCC review.
