Detroit back in the day.

My 10 year anniversary is coming up this summer, the one of leaving Detroit.

I wasn't thinking of doing the thread but that Chrysler 200 commercial got me thinking.

I've got an entire box full of 35mm Detroit.

I would get all of that hooked up on here if I were you. That stuff you posted is like a cool drink of water to me.

I repeat myself with some of the pics and it takes hours to scan pics in one by one. But yeah.

well, whatever anyone thinks of that commercial, i was embarrassingly teary eyed during it because I constantly think of Detroit, and there isn't a moment I don't obsess over metropolitan hegemony, decline, and well, the sort of thing places like metro detroit does better than any other area anywhere. (luckily I had sunglasses handy...).

long live Detroit.

That commercial gave me chills. I must plan a pilgrimage to Detroit. It is the patriotic thing to do.

Where are you finding those cars? I've been through virtually every neighborhood in the city, and I never see them. The only thing I've ever seen was a boat someone abandoned in the Delray/Fort Wayne area.

Mostly along the stretch that was along the river from the Ren-Cen to Chene Park which is now cleaned up with a park, lofts and stuff and up along the old train tracks(bike trail now) all the way to Eastern Market.

The area east of Woodward and 94 winding up all the way to the I-75 entrance.

The mini van was along John R. and Ferry which is now condos/townhomes.

I bet if you went down Gratiot,6 mile or even a car lot on 8 mile.

I don't know. I always see movies filmed in the 70's and 80's with cars on blocks or abandoned in some alley, but in all my travels throughout the city I have never seen anything like it besides that boat in Delray. Don't get me wrong, I've seen plenty of illegal dumping sites, etc. but I've never seen a burnt out car anywhere in the last decade or even in my limited city exposures growing up.

With scrapmetal currently selling for ~10 cents a pound, those carcasses, if they existed, wouldn't stay there a day before getting picked up by someone with a trailer and winch.

"Scrapping" has become big business even more so with the boom in recycling.

There was also a period when insurance fraud was the thing, tired of your car? leave it downtown someone will torch it for a few $100.

Downtown and WSU/Cultural/New center have improved since then so I doubt you'll see it too often anymore.

I was either in awe or having too much fun to take pics of the burned up Burger King along Cass or the bums warming themselves with 55 gallon drum fires in China town.
