Looks nice! Would work well right close to the water. Is it?

No, it's actually about as far away from the water as you can get in peninsular Halifax. Here's the site, on Windsor Street in a mostly residential part of the West End: https://maps.google.ca/maps?q=saint+...9.72,,0,-12.33

First Reading for the MPS/LUB amendments for this project will be held at Regional Council on Tuesday (June 25th). Staff are recommending against approval mainly because the building will be the tallest in the neighbourhood therefore making it unsuitable. HWCC has recommended approval.

I don't really want to see the old church demolished (repurpose, geez!) but I'm a bit surprised staff are recommending against a seven storey senior's residence with community space. I can't imagine anything less objectionable.

Reading the entire package, it is hard to understand the opposition to this except from those directly adjacent, and even then it seems rather a stretch to consider this much different. The two main arguments against seem to be on-street parking being affected and of course the usual "It's TOO TALL!!!" nonsense that we always get in this town. I hope it gets the green light.

Looking at the staff report for the Public Hearing, the renderings look like they show a lot of vinyl. I liked the first renderings, but the more I see the more I am concerned about aesthetics. Massing and goal of the of the project I am in full support of.

I drove by there after I got into town and if you take the churches into account; the tallest building around there is likely in the 3-4 storey range. So this isn't too big of a stretch in terms of evolution. It's a corner lot, which is typically where (from a planning perspective) we would want the more intense buildings go. That said it may be that there chruches are in fact only 2; which would make this more of a stretch...but still, I don't see a big deal to it.

Halifax council to hold public hearing on proposed seniors’ complex

Quote:
Regional council could decide tonight whether to allow a contentious development project at the corner of Windsor and Willow streets to proceed.

A public hearing will be held at the weekly council meeting, during which residents can offer their opinions on the proposed plan for a church and seniors’ complex.

“Of course we’re hopeful that the city councillors will see their way clear to approve it,” said Brian Jay of the implementation team at St. John’s United Church. “We’ve been working on this for a long time.”

NIMBYs have no shame. That being said, it could be a POS.

Hearing is airing on Eastlink. Same old Nimby bull. Too Tall, Too much traffic. I get so mad watching it. It's always the same argument no matter what neighborhood. Most speak of the need for urban density and the need for new development but then just take a shit all over this. I know you can't please everyone but I have never understood why in this city you can barely please anyone.

I was watching it as well. Same old, same old, n i m b y. I do not believe that the average person living right across the street from this development would have their life change one bit. I walk past Fenwick quite regularly and am not influenced by the height as I walk by. It does not affect me. I suggest this development will only improve the neighborhood.

Finally some people with some professional and fact based thoughts. The last few have mentioned exactly what we all believe. This isn't going to divide a neighborhood and will be a perfect home for the seniors who have made that community their home for years.

Glorious McCroskey speaking against it because it isn't "compatible" with the neighborhood. So I guess only single family homes are allowed on the peninsula.

Also Karsten and Johns and Craig, all against. Theme: "It's too TALL!!!!"

Craig seems to think the wood-frame 3-storey Highfield Park Special next to the church is more desirable.

If this does not go thru the church should sell the lot and a slum like on the corner of North and Windsor could be put there.
