I'm elated to see 415 Madison come down. It's an eyesore. Stained white brick looks terrible.

The pace of construction on this mammoth tower is picking up, and that's good news. Go out and see it if you can. It'll be topped out before we know it.

It seems like it was only about three years ago that this project was announced, and in that short time, they razed w 700’ tower and are about 100’ above ground on NY’s latest icon. Only in NY!!!

Really hoping this ends up at 1425 instead of 1388.

I’m fairly sure that 1,388 is the HOF, but the actual top is over 1,400’.

So this isn't going to have a concrete core?

Maybe a platform for another crane - on the 48th street side near Madison (NYguy photo #28)? Like 1 Vandy, it had two on the top and the orange one on the side?

Because four cranes aren’t enough?

There are 2,591 posts in this thread. Please point out in which post the question was answered.

I don't mind it when someone asks a question that was answered but the person asking doesn't know it because they didn't spend several hours sifting through thousands of posts to check. Maybe just answer their question, or allow someone else to answer it.

It’s in post #2513 on page 126. And please for the last time, no more asking this same question again. Thank you.

That's it, PittsburghPA... you can't ask that same question again. People apparently don't want to be helpful and/or cooperative. I mean, what is this... a forum where people come to share and learn about buildings?

I don’t think it’s a lack of cooperation. That question has been asked and answered several times over the last few pages so I think that’s where the exasperation stems from. If you are so concerned about it why didn’t you take one for the team and answer it yourself instead of complaining?

To answer the question, it’s because this building sits above the GCT train shed so a typical core cannot be engineered in between the tracks below.

30 Hudson Yards does not have a concrete core for the same reason. That building is all-steel as well.

Though I feel we should say that it being all steel is not somehow a bad thing. If I was building a skyscraper I would definitely want a concrete core but it´s not necessarily necessary. Material science has advanced since this 70s when the Twins were built out of mostly steel, so has the entire construction industry. This all-steel buildings are a lot stronger than older ones.

The six exterior columns can be a bit misleading. There are eight interior columns that transfer quite a bit of the vertical - and lateral - load of the tower into it's 'center', which essentially act like a concrete core, structurally. They just aren't encased in concrete, like we are used to seeing. The engineering here is pretty amazing, don't get me wrong, but it's responding very well to a site that's constrained with the train tracks underneath, and a preview of 175 Park Avenue, which will be similalarly challenged.
