Yep, the boom does appear to be laying there from what I can see on the webcam. It won't be the first crane we've seen that the tower narrowed, but they aren't that common either.

Pretty much fully up. They are putting the last concrete counter weight in now.

The fifth crane at the Bow definately looks like a crane, but it's TINY compared to the other cranes on site, even the other one on the south block.

Wow, the crane at the Courts site is bloody huge for such a small worksite. It towers over the surrounding area and the boom covers the entire block. I imagine part of this is to lift in materials from well away from the parkade, but still - if you didn't know better, you'd swear a major tower was about to rise.

The new crane at the Bow is another luffer, the arm looks to be assembled and sitting on the ground still. The cab is up though.

The one at the courts I'd agree seems huge, the one thing that I noticed thats odd is the concrete pad for it sits diagaonal to the site, rather then square

8 months ago, if you'd used the phrases "total global economic meltdown", "Great Recession", or "worst economy since the 1930s" - let's be honest, how many of you honestly woulda believed we'd only be down 9 out of 75 cranes?

I can't believe how well things have gone so far on this front.

^Make it 8 down once The Bow's newest crane is fully assembled (I won't add it to the list until it is).

There was a news/editorial report on CityTV's Breakfast Television the other day done by Mike McCourt. Just a general look at how the economy is affecting things locally. At the end, they were overlooking downtown from Crescent Heights and said something like "While things may not be as bad as in other areas, if you look downtown, there are clearly less construction cranes than this time last year." I of course having plenty of time on my hands over the last week or so sent him an e-mail to correct him saying that while I could not say so about downtown in particular, there are actually more cranes in Calgary than this time last year (looking back in the thread, the number at this time last year was either 59 or 60). I included a link to the thread. No response yet.

Supreme awesomeness. While it's unlikely we're ever going to educate the media on "tallest west of Toronto", I think it's very important to not let completely false news out.

Without looking at your numbers I'd have to agree, too - it seems like just as many cranes, if not more, compared to last spring. Downtown is a bloody field of them right now, the Beltline still has plenty, and projects at the UofC, SAIT, and other major locations just keep adding more.

Oh noes! A couple of condo towers are on hold/cancelled! The sky is falling!

^Yeah, even though the peak was 75, that was a bit of an aligning of stars, with projects like the hospital expansions and early wave of condos (Xenex, Castello, etc.) still having their cranes, and the newer (mainly institutional) projects getting theirs. I could see the total dipping into the low 50s if things don't pick up in 2010. Centennial, The Bow, and EAP, etc. will still be going strong at that time though. Still not bad though. As someone said elsewhere, look at somewhere like Chicago with a half-built building just sitting there, etc.

5th Crane at the Bow looked to be fully up when I drove by this afternoon. I don't believe it's a luffer.

Yeah, it is up but the sun is glaring off it so I can't tell much else from the web cams.

There were pieces of a tower for the second crane at the atlantic ave art block this morning on my ride in, I suspect it will be up by tomorrow....looked to be the same variety as the other one

Not sure if this has been mentioned but there is a base for a second crane at that Inglewood develpment (9th ave about about 10st SE)
