I remember going to a city meeting where one of the board members said that he just got of the ferry from Vancouver and how horrible the concrete canyons were in Vancouver and how he was against high rises etc. I am so happy with all the new high rise condos and offices that have been built in Victoria the last 10 years. Especially because most have been built on old parking lots. It's been exciting to see too.

I'm also loving the infilling of parking lots by new residential and office in Victoria. I think that the quality of new builds is pretty hit or miss though, and would hate to see too much of the old core redeveloped as very mediocre boxy buildings. Victoria currently is quite different from Vancouver, and has a strong Pacific-Northwest feeling, quite similar to a smaller Portland. I think that the key for its development will always be balancing its historic charm and great neighbourhoods, with densification. I don't think that that should be a big problem, there are plenty of opportunities in the city to densify without becoming destructive.
