That elevator better start out nice and slow if it is going to move at 41 feet per second. That will be a rush!

What some of the balconies will look like:

These balconies help to reduce solar gain and prevent the building heating up

The construction photos remind me of early construction photos of Burj Khalifa (then called Burj Dubai).

Top 85 floors of Kingdom Tower will go unoccupied

Quote:
The top 85 floors of Jeddah's under-construction marvel, Kingdom Tower, will go unoccupied as they are too narrow for apartments or offices, international reports suggest.

From the article posted above:

The Guardian's report adds Kingdom Tower's developers will not be too perturbed by how long the tower takes to "fill up".
Well of course as this tower is really for pride. Given the ideal location, companies would love to snatch up this prime class-A space and luxurious living units with paramount access to a 24/7 hub.

Thier idea of luring companies is a mirage. Same things you see in the desert. A hallucination of false reality.

Pride or not, its still impressive considering the engineering involved. If this went up in Shanghai, its all good, but its secluded and in an area where it really can't shine. A good tower in theory, but the location is horrid.

The master plan depicts a city in the desert, but do the economics add up?

It's part of the city of Jeddah... population is almost 3 million. So it isn't really in the middle of nowhere like it looks in the pictures. It's true that it isn't sitting in the middle of other highrises like it would in say NYC, but the master plan does look to fill it in. (Whether the economics add up is another question, but when has that ever stopped the Middle East before?)

Its 3,281 feet, so that gives us a 1000m. Also 167 floors. The mods should update this info into the title hint hint.

I agree they build, and even if its vacant for a while (which the developers of this tower don't mind), it would suck to have such a good tower stand alone for a while. The urban context is just bad for a masterpiece such as this. Shenzhen, Shanghai, Tokyo sure, but it really won't shine to its full potential in Jeddah which is a gamma+ city and in a region that is oppressive. Not necessarily the culture most companies are looking for.

Its akin to building Steinway in Bikini Island. Why bother when it won't shine to its potential.

The Abraj al-Bait is a 2,000-footer that was essentially built atop the holiest site in Islam. And it is being accompanied by additional hotels and residences that have greatly increased the density of Mecca. Given the long-term plan for the neighborhood, the Kingdom Tower will not be out in the middle of nowhere for long...

Jeddah skyline and KT:
Have they ever been in a 'spacious studio' apartment in NYC? Give me a staircase and I'll gladly combine two small floors way up in the sky into an apt.
