I understand it's a code requirement. There could be a requirement to setback to allow windows. There are many blank walls on large buildings in HRM because there is no policy to address it.

Agreed that it's ugly, but I don't think it's just a Halifax thing. Some of the same here and here in Toronto, and here and here in Vancouver.

CIBC building on Barrington addressed the blank wall issue by setting the building back from the property line and installing windows. The Dillon chose to go with a blank wall.

My office in the CIBC building has a stunning view of the blank wall of the TD building. At least it's not red.

Is there not a big mural going up on those blank walls? If I recall that was one of the main appeals of this development when it was first proposed.

You have to have a pretty substantial setback before you can have any meaningful amount of windows. On the smaller lots of Halifax that's a lot of lost density. Ultimately that blank wall will be covered up when the building next to it gets redeveloped.

An therein lies the problem. There doesn't seem to be a lot of consideration for the appearance of some mid-sized buildings, just max out the density and build a squat structure. Set the building back and build higher, and build quality.

I think this is the key and there are many ways to make these blank walls look better. I understand that eventually a new building will be built, covering up the blank wall, but this supposes that all old buildings will get replaced which is not desirable and anyway would take a long time.

Presumably it's related to fire code?

I agree, though, that it leaves a lot of ugliness around, especially for those buildings that never actually have developments happen next to the blank wall.

One would think that there could be something done to improve the situation, but there would have to be some motivation to do so. Not sure the motivation is out there, so we're stuck with this side-effect of development, so to speak.

Occupancy is April 1st. Note the ground floor is coming along. There is three retail entrances all at an angle to the sidewalk.

This is now occupied and "Completed". The retail units are papered up with no 'For Lease' signs which is good.

I'll say it: this thing is ugly and characterless. It looks like a low-bid winner for both design and construction.

In other words, typical.

Couldn't agree more. The ground floor looks and feels so unwelcoming.

Am I imagining it, or has that building - or some minor variation of it - not gone up on a few dozen sites in HRM over the last few years? It's becoming an omnipresent style. And that's not a compliment, BTW.

For the most part I like this building - I like the variation of the angled storefronts and the wood finish along the ground level. Is it a mind-blowing building? No - but it's better than some other buildings that have gone up in the area (looking at you https://www.skyscraperpage.com/forum...=214613&page=7)

I walk by it daily and look forward to whatever retail opens up soon
