You see the outline of the Nova Centre; I see the decades-old dead zone on Barrington.

I thought this aerial was interesting if a bit fuzzy. It would be nice to see a higher resolution shot.

Don't let Friends of The Halifax Common see that photo; some folks might get triggered and ask for the Welsford tower to be torn down due to that shadow.

All jokes aside; it's nice to see the density in the North End taking shape. Great pic.

Far far bigger and more real issue is the vast amount of space the damn Oval occupies for a usage pattern that is minuscule at best.

I have no problem with the oval. People need to keep active in the winter; this promotes it and is used by lots.

It's used by a lot of people on a handful of days. I would suggest it goes unused for 300 or so days a year.

I seem to remember rollerbladers and skateboarders using it in the summer. You can borrow bikes there too right?

The Oval is used by thousands of people during the winter months and in the offseason, by roller skaters and bikers, it is well worth it!

The "Friends Of" people agree with you... down with amenities for citizens to use and bring back more grasslands!!!

The cows! What about the cows?! Maybe Peggy can write an article and quote your opinions on the oval...

Just kidding...

That is the officially-approved HRM narrative. However, based upon personal observation, it is almost always deserted except for a handful of days in the winter when the area hipsters descend en masse to try to skate on it. Keeping it was a big mistake. The next big mistake opportunity will arise when it needs major renovation and repair.

Man you're a real stick in the mud aren't you! You are against anything to do with physical activity.

The Oval has been a great success getting people out for physical activity with over 115,000 attendance during the winter months, and is used throughout the year. It also brings activity to an otherwise dead area especially during the winter months. This makes the area safer and increases the quality of life for the residents of the city.

It looks like the photo was taken on approach to Stanfield and probably by an iPhone through the planes window. I have a shot in winter twilight from almost the exact same angle while returning from FLA a few years ago.

Photo of what was then called Waterfront Cornwallis Place (now Summit Place) under construction in 1988 prior to the boardwalk and plaza where the Wave sculpture is located being finished, posted by the photographer on FB:

I had no idea "Waterfront Place" was the original name. It was Cornwallis Place when I first occupied an office there in 1990.

You are right, I had a brain cramp there. There is another building called Waterfront Place just up the street that I had this one confused with.

When was that oval made? I don't recall seeing that when I lived in Halifax?

Awesome pic though!

Opened in 2010, built for the 2011 Canada Games. Now known as the Emera oval.
