absolutely.

relatively speaking portland's downtown is very active. you are always within a block or two of some open business or residential building. not true in new york, chicago, SF, etc.

those cities have multi-block areas that are literally GHOST TOWNS on evenings and weekends.

agreed - anyone who lived here in the 70's and 80's would find the assumption that Portland's downtown is not currently a vibrant and active place in the evenings and weekends patently absurd.

Just look at the mess of the South Waterfront district. Height has nothing to do with good urban planning. It is all about the movement of people and retail/restaurants/stores that are on the ground floor.

While I can't bring myself to praise this building, I don't think it's by any means the worst building in the Pearl. The Asa or the Lovejoy, anyone?

It's better than a parking lot, at least. That corner of the Pearl is actually starting to feel like part of a city. I think the foot traffic from both that building and the family housing building will be worth it in the end.

It won't be much longer until the northern reaches of the pearl and NW Portland with be a contiguous stretch of activity, an idea that was inconceivable just 15 years ago.

Also in the Pearl, it appears there is a new coffee shop going in the Wyatt building on the corner of 13th and Marshall. No signs yet saying which company, but there is construction going on inside, and I could see the blueprints inside, which all said "coffee shop."

About time! I met Bob Ball one night and mentioned I thought it was sad that retail just hadn't filled in yet. He said he had at least one place lined up but when he sold the building the new owner thought it wasn't an 'upscale' enough restaurant.

Unfortunately I have an old iPhone so my pictures kinda suck, but if look closely on the right side you might be able to see the solar panels.

on an eco-roof no less. it will be, i think, the largest one in the state and will be visible from the fremont bridge approach.

It's not bad. I just wish it had more balconies. I think they really add a human element. They greatly improve the parts of this building that have them.

I really like all the wood accents underneath. However it would have been neat to feel the decking with your feet, as the balconies are not wood on the top surface.
