Hamilton’s First Celebration of Civic Engagement
Dear Citizen,
In the 2010 municipal election over 140 individuals presented themselves as candidates for Council and School Board Trustee to the voters of our city asking for their support on Election Day. Of these, 37 were successfully elected and are busy fulfilling their responsibilities to the community. We wish them well.
The remaining approximately one hundred civic-minded individuals have learned much from their attempt to secure an elected position and are busy going about their lives.
A small committee has been meeting these past few months in the hope that we can bring this group of citizens together for an evening of sharing, reflection and learning.
The evening is being called “Hamilton’s First Celebration of Civic Engagement”. The purpose of the evening is to celebrate and thank all who ran in the last election, although unsuccessful in winning office, and to engage in a conversation about the ways and means of fostering a more positive political culture in Hamilton.
Specifically the event will focus on:
· Helping people realize that through engagement successful cities are created,
· Fostering pride in our collective effort to improve the community,
· Building a desire for individuals’ involvement in municipal politics,
· Increase the number of voters who support what is and help create what isn’t, and
· Most importantly, to do all of this in positive, respectful ways supporting our current elected officials.
Our keynote speaker for the evening will be. Dave Meslin, editor of “Local Motion: The Art of Civic Engagement in Toronto”. His presentation will be followed by a series of facilitated round table discussions about Hamilton issues.
Please consider this your personal invitation to attend on March 29th at Liuna Station, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Food and refreshments will be provided. The costs of the evening have been defrayed by interested and generous sponsors. The ticket cost is $35 with a portion of the evening proceeds going to support the United Way of Burlington & Greater Hamilton.
