Traveling around southeast France

Last May I visited the French area of Switzerland for three days (photos here), then spent the next two weeks traveling around France. I started off in the southeast of France before making my way to Southwest France. Here, I’m posting photos I took in the southeast, which included visits to Grenoble & Lyon (both a little more central), as well as Avignon, Nîmes, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Grenoble

1. Arriving at the Grenoble train station from Geneva.

2.

3.

7. Riding the Téléphérique (aerial tramway) up to Fort de La Bastille

8. Gorgeous views from Fort de La Bastille high above Grenoble.

22.

23.

24. Love the grass tramway!

25. This is the arena where Peggy Fleming won Olympic gold in ladies figure skating at the 1968 Winter Olympics. It was the only gold medal won by the USA at those games.

Avignon

87. I arrived late the prior night so these photos pick up the next morning. My hotel in Avignon was right outside the entrance to the old medieval centre of Avignon. I actually previously visited Avignon on a high school trip back in 1999.

88.

89.

90. The Palais des Papes, which hosted Popes in the 1300s.

91.

Nîmes

114. Arriving in Nîmes. I also previously visited Nîmes on my high school trip back in 1999.

134.

135. Maison carrée - an ancient Roman temple (which inspired the capitol building of Virginia)

136.

137.

138.

139.

140. Back to the train station to head back to Avignon.

Avignon

141. Arriving back in Avignon.

142.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

143. The next day I visited Châteauneuf-du-Pape, arguably the best wine region in France.

144.

145.

146.

147.

148.

149. Love to see vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see!

150. In this direction you can see the Alps in the far distance.

151. The remnants of the old château.

155.

156.

157. Time for some wine tasting!

158. And another wine tasting!

159. Followed with an excellent lunch.

Avignon

160. And that concluded my last day in the Avignon area. I took the train the next morning to Montpellier.

I’ll eventually post my photos from Southwest France, which includes Montpellier and Toulouse, but I hope you enjoyed this glimpse of some great areas of southeast France.

Very nice pictures!

Whenever I think of "Avignon," I think of the Avignon Papacy I learned about in 10th grade AP European History class, and I also think of that song we were taught in high school French class "Sur le Pont d'Avignon." And there you actually got to see the bridge of Avignon!

Lyon is one of my absolute favorites cities I've ever been to (I got that skyline view from the hill/amphitheater with Mont Blanc clear on the horizon). Oh, and I adore France so thank you.

Seriously, did you make it all by train? I don't even know how to go to Nîmes or Avignon by train.

I remember, my dad took me there on road trips when I was a kid, cause he loved driving for vacations.
You know what? He was a f^cking roadhog, dangerous on roads. That sick prick thought he was like a rally driver in the Alps and the Pyrénées, that was frightening. I was scared to die when he was on booze, handling a steering wheel.
But at least we toured the entire country + Spain and Italy with him.
Mixed memories from childhood... He wasn't violent at all, but my dad was a troubled individual in a car, like he had to prove himself behind the steering wheel.
How childish. He was just a kid. He never grew up.

Anyway, I haven't seen these towns, Nîmes and Avignon since then. Thanks for posting.

Gorgeous. Love the trams, and the stream down the middle of the street in Nimes. And that appears to be an excellent use of a gondola.

143-160 didn't load for me, BTW.

Wait, is this the bridge from the song???

I did all of this travel by train except for the day trip to Châteauneuf-du-Pape since it isn't on a train line. I opted for rideshare which was relatively easy from Avignon but getting back it was more of a challenge to find one. Eventually I did manage to get a ride back to Avignon.

Hmmm, I wonder if there was just a momentary issue with Flickr? They all load for me.

Thanks for sharing those photos, I love them so much from the bottom of my heart. I was in a bind with multiple deadlines approaching, so I decided to try DoMyPaper at https://domypaper.com/ The result was fantastic! The paper was thorough and well-written, and it was delivered on time. The writer clearly understood the topic and followed my instructions perfectly. If you need high-quality academic assistance, DoMyPaper is the way to go.
