I would love to see more car dealerships go the way of demolition. I am hoping my next car will be a Tesla and just buy it online.

I highly recommend it, I ordered mine online in June of last year, and picked it up 2 weeks later. No need for huge dealerships.

That view just makes me hope that the Holiday Inn Express (Old Shilo) is redeveloped into something taller to bring some balance to the southern side of 2nd South.

Same. If I remember correctly, didn't they have a huge parking garage planned for the middle of the block? I mean anything is better than a parking lot, but I remember the overall design being a bit underwhelming.

Certainly not *skyscraper* related, but my friends had a coffee shop at 1588 S State Street (the Watchtower, used to be Coffee Connection or something?) and just moved one block west to 1588 S Main. That intersection on Main has two more apartment buildings going up on each corner, one replacing a run down home (already demolished and the framing is up for the new building) and the other replacing a parking lot. The third of the four corners has a bank that they heard is going to close and be replaced at the end of their lease or something something.

There have been initiatives to support development in that part of the city too, from 1300 to 2100 South and between 300 West and State, and there are a lot of small projects going up that we don't talk about much here. Mostly three stories, most called (insert name of my dead grandmother and all her lady friends here).

If you're a local, check out their new place, still called the Watchtower, still geek-themed, but upgraded in a much nicer building than they used to be.

Love Watchtower! What was a highway (state street) coffee shop with no drive thru is now my neighborhood coffee shop! Amazing what moving a block can do! I just moved into a house about a block and a half away. Ballpark is coming up folks. Believe it! Just wish I had a neighborhood bar I liked. Not in love with Willie’s or Big Willie’s.

Any word on the Cascade? Wasn’t it suppose to start construction when the other 3 CCC condo properties hit 80% capacity, witch I’m pretty sure happens quite a while ago.

My assumption was that CCCRI/PRI made a deal with Boyer when Boyer was proposing an office tower that was competing against 111 Main by CCCRI for Goldman Sachs. CCCRI would hold off on building Cascade, ie. Tower 2(res.), if Boyer developed their site into a res. tower instead of an office tower, which would then eliminate the competition for CCC to build 111 Main. Now that Kensington and Hines have entered the res. tower competition, I doubt Cascade will be built within the next few years. Maybe in 5 years.

Just spent the day hanging out in Austin with my family.

As a resident of San Antonio and a Utah native/downtown SLC fanboy, downtown Austin gives me all of the jealous. It's incredible what's going on there.

I agree with all of this. I haven't been to the new Watchtower location yet, but I'm glad they're moving into a newer/nicer location, and I'm excited to have them back. Also about the bars...yeah. I'm sure it won't be too long before some good bars make it down into this area. You would think the Ballpark neighborhood would be the next great frontier for that.

Watchtower moving does add to the continued dilapidation of State Street. Man that stretch really needs some love. Anybody know the status of the new complex replacing the Capitol Motel? I figured that would have started construction by now. The stretch of State from 21st South to 13th South is one of the least appealing stretches of road in the city, from my estimation.

The Red Lion Hotel has been sold. It will be redeveloped into several new buildings.

You're remembering correctly. Here's the website of that development:
