AUSTIN, Texas - Keep it walkable.

I came from Houston for a business trip of sorts awhile back and, well, on this day (11 Mar 2011) it wasn't so hot out there and it was a good day for a long walk.

For shame, I had an idea for making some money before I saw that sign. Parking attendants are usually roaming with cameras, right?

Yes, this little stretch off the center of town isn't the most pedestrian-friendly. But, hey, I like to live dangerously.

Nice.

Nice capture with the bird on the star.

And no, these trees aren't dead. They just hadn't gotten their leaves back since it was just barely spring then. Those palm trees died back from the cold weather we had. Just a month earlier it dipped to 16F in Austin. Palm trees don't like cold.

I don't like to get too far into the "OMG AUSTIN LIBRUL" thing but Texas is a more nuanced place than the national media credits it, especially with loudmouths like Perry putting the idea out there that we're all going to come out with guns and lynch you if you don't think the way he does.

ee/ue: Don't give up the photo thing just yet, you've still got plenty of good stuff yet from the look of it in that Toronto thread. You helped me a lot with your commentary early on.

I'm so intrigued by Austin. My best friend is ditching NYC after nearly 15 years and moving there next week so I guess at some point I'll be visiting.

Take MOPAC and Loop 1.
How can I do that?
Because there's 2 names for the same highway.
I thought you said MOPAC wasn't a loop!"

lol Capital of Texas Highway (Loop 360) isn't a loop either even though the name surely suggests it. There are a lot of streets (and highways especially) in Austin that have two names. Some even have 3. Usually it's a case of an old street having been turned into a highway and the old name still being used for certain parts of it. I-35 for example occupies a space that used to be a street called East Avenue. It was the eastern borderline for downtown. And there's a West Avenue, too, on the other side of downtown. Texas Highway 71 which runs through Austin has 3 names. Really it only has two through the city, but there's a 3rd name as you leave the city to the east. When Texas Highway 71 was built it was aligned with Ben White Boulevard in South Austin. That section of the freeway is still called Ben White Boulevard, even though it's now an 8 lane highway. As it exits the city to the east the name changes to Bastrop Highway, or rather was called that at one point when it was much smaller. Still, it's remarkably easy to get around Austin because the city is so narrow. Much of the city is positioned north to south along I-35, and so there isn't much width to it.

With me living in Oak Hill, I'm totally aware of this dilemma every time I used to have to give directions to my out of town friends coming from all points east. You didn't mention 290 which merges into IH-35 then joins up with Ben White / SH71, then Ben White ends at the 360 split and the 71 and 290 splits at the Y.........aarrhhh. Thanks to the GPS no need to give directions anymore.

Lol! Austin has some confusing as hell names. They never seem to accept the highway names and just keep the street names no matter that they are turned into 8 lane raised highways. Ben White has a bunch of names and can be Bastrop, 71, 290.

Oh and the 290.... goes from Houston to I-35 in north Austin then turns into 2222 which crosses Austin, then at the same time way down south it turns into Ben White/71/290... and runs across south Austin out to Lake Travis. There is the whole 360/Capitol of Texas thing. Bee Caves is 2244 so often when telling people how to get to my house I say take Bee Caves out to .... and they call me later and say "Take Bee Caves or 2244?" lol. "They are the same thing you nut!" I tell them.

Oh, and 183. What do we not call it? Research Blvd, Anderson Ln, Ed Bluestein Blvd? It has lots of good names. Downtown can be just as confusing to some people. We used to call the east west streets my types of trees but now use number (and sometimes names now too). Like 6th Street is Pecan Street, and goes by both names depending on time of year or like during SXSW or different Fest they will use different names. MLK is 19th Street, and originally Magnolia St. 15th is 15th near UT and the Capitol downtown, but on the east of downtown and out to Mopac (or loop 1) it is Enfield not 15th, and is also known as North Street originally. Dean Keaton is 26th street, although in east Austin it is Manor. 24th Street is Windsor. 2nd is Live Oak, and now also Willie Nelson. And and the 1st St mess confuses people. It is Cesar Chavez for most if not all of downtown. But it is also 1st street, and originally Water St. However 1st Street stops right in the middle of downtown crosses the river and then runs way down south. The result of which has all of these street names south of the river using the same numbers as the street names north of the river in downtown Austin. Only in south Austin they are north south, while in downtown they are east west. lol.

The really screwed up thing that confuses so many is that on Loop 1 (Mopac, lol) they don't use any of the number street names, they ONLY use the names like Enfield, Windsor, MLK, and so on (except 5th and 6th). But on the east side on I-35 they use just the number names (except CC and MLK). Then between the two highways downtown it is anyones guess what they may actually use as the names. At one intersection they may have it as 15h, and another MLK, or at one it is 1st, another CC. 6th often has both and will have 6th real large with "Pecan St" written under it. lol.

But with all that mess I still think 183/Research Blvs/...all the other names... confuses the most people. Well that and 290 and 2222 and Ben White confusion. 290 is quite an odd piece of work. Clearly who ever plans all this stuff was dropping lots of acid, or opium if it was way back in the day.

Edit: I forgot... We can't even come up with one name for the part of the river running right though downtown. To me it will always be Town Lake. But it is now also Lady Bird Lake. I love Lady Bird. She was a great woman and first lady. The mother of Austin I like to say, she loved us so much. But I am just so used to Town Lake, to me that is what it is. lol. Oh and speaking of the Town Lake... The main bridge is now also Ann Richards Bridge, but also Congress Bridge. So there is that too.

Oh, on topic of thread... Great photos, and song selection! Thank you.

I'm in Austin at least two or three times a year I guess, on average, so I'm pretty wise to the road quirks. I had less knowledge of the layout of things on the ground going west of downtown, or the bus system. The plan, such as it was, was to get out to somewhere around the Drag and then work my way back on the bus to Barton Creek to get back to where I was staying for the weekend. I didn't realize until I almost got to Mopac that I'd overshot it bigtime. Oh well, more photos. And walking on the side of Mopac was quite a thrill!
