I would argue this isn't a feature(or that gentrification shouldn't be blamed for that) of gentrification but rather something that has been in the works for 30 years. Big box stores were the boogieman 20 years ago. Today it is the internet. Those mom and pop stores would eventually close anyways(unless something unforeseen happens in the future).

Everywhere in the US cities have become less unique. Period.

what if the media emphasized how gentrification, can in fact mean the preservation of the nations most elegant and beautiful housing stock, which was inexplicably left to decay for 20-40 years (depending on the city)..

It can but it in many cases I haven't noticed this to be so.
