I live in China, and have never heard of nor seen this store. Weird.

A quick sidenote; Tim Horton's just opened their first China restaurant in Shanghai today. There were massive lines to get in.

I shop online at gap, rarely buy in store unless their socks or underwear are on sale cause they can be really cheap

Miniso posted this on their instagram today

Basically says that Miniso China will take over the operations of Miniso stores in Canada advancing to take over ownership of these Canadian stores.

Holt Renfrew Ogilvy’ Reveals New Menswear Brands

Luxury brand fans in Montreal will be pleased with the lineup of menswear brands carried in the revamped Holt Renfrew Ogilvy store in Montreal, which is under construction and is being revealed in phases. Holt Renfrew’s updated website shows that the updated fourth floor men’s store will have luxe brands including: Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Balmain, Brioni, Canali, Comme des Garçons Homme Plus, Common Projects (shoes), Dior Homme, Dolce & Gabbana, Dries Van Noten, Ermenegildo Zegna, Fendi, Givenchy, Gucci, Heshung, Isaia, Junya Watanabe, Moncler, Prada, The Row, Tom Ford, and Valentino. Celine’s new menswear line will also be featured.

It’s an impressive lineup, matched in Canada only by Holt Renfrew’s highly productive Vancouver flagship store. Holt Renfrew Ogilvy, which is expanding to 250,000 square feet and will involve merging Ogilvy and Holt Renfrew storefronts, will become the largest luxury store in Canada in terms of overall square footage.

Menswear retailer Harry Rosen, which carries many of the same brands, will no doubt take notice of the lineup. Retail Insider will analyze the situation further in a few months as the gloves come off in the competition for high-end menswear in Montreal.

Toronto’s downtown Holt Renfrew store, currently occupying 16,500 square feet in a separate building at 100 Bloor Street West, will relocate next year onto the third floor of Holts’ flagship at 50 Bloor Street West, occupying about 25,000 square feet. A similar brand lineup to that of Montreal and Vancouver is expected, including shop-in-stores not present in the smaller 100 Bloor unit.  SOURCE: RETAIL INSIDER

Just checked out the website, looks like they just sell a bunch of useless crap. Teenagers will probably love it but there are already dozens of stores in the city that sell the exact same poorly made stuff. http://miniso.ca/

Funny they call it 'China's New Version Of Miniso' because Miniso is already a Chinese-owned brand based in Guangzhou. I really dislike that they market themselves as 'Japanese' even though there is little connection to Japan and almost all products they sell are made outside of Japan.

They're glorified dollar stores. I like them but don't see the need for more than 1-2 chains like that. The market will decide.

I don't really shop at Pier 1 but they have a lot of stores in Canada, hopefully they can turn it around.

Reuters: Pier I hires restructuring advisors
BY MARIANNE WILSON
March 15, 2019

Pier I Imports Inc. is mulling its financial options.

The struggling home furnishings and décor retailer has added debt restructuring specialists at Kirkland & Ellis LLP to the advisers who are helping the chain explore strategic alternatives, Reuters reported. Pier 1, which has about 985 stores in the United States and Canada, is also meeting with investment bankers who have debt restructuring expertise, the report said.

As of December, the retailer had about $200 million in long-term debt, with the debt coming due in 2021. At this time, a Chapter 11 filing seems unlikely, the report said, as the company had $71 million in cash as of December as well as $400 million from a revolving credit line,

Pier I has been struggling under increased competition from online players and from value and mass merchants, including Walmart and Target, who have stepped up their offerings in the home décor space. In December, Pier 1 CEO Alasdair James abruptly stepped down amid reports that the company had hired Credit Suisse to help evaluate a full range of strategic alternatives.

Sephora plans 35 new store openings for 2019
Robyn Turk | Monday, March 11 2019

Brick and mortar might be an unsteady retail landscape for some brands, but Sephora certainly hasn't found much trouble. The beauty retailer announced plans to open 35 new U.S. and Canada stores by the end of this year, starting later this week with the launch of a location in the new Hudson Yards shopping district in New York City.

I've not been to a Uniqlo in the USA before but the Uniqlo prices are the highest in the world. Japan is the cheapest, followed by Hong Kong and Canada!

Canada is 17% more than Japan and the US is 44.5% higher than Japan. The US has high tariffs which pushes the prices up.

It's from this article

Somewhat related.

I went to Muji the other day and came out of the store empty handed. The prices have gone from reasonably high to insanely high in a short period.

They are really expensive, just a small carry on case is over $200. The dishware is really pricey too. And their clothes don't carry bigger sizes, pants cut off at 34. And rarely see anything over an "L".

I like some of the stationery stuff and little storage items but Daiso has some of the exact same ones at half the price.

Its nice to have the option though.

As a tiny guy who wears size S and whose pants are 28/30, that sounds like a paradise ! I buy most of my clothes online because it's hard to find stuff small enough to fit me in stores.

Cultural department store is a good description

How a Canadian Chain Is Reinventing Book Selling

Indigo is expanding to the United States with its new model for how a big bookstore chain can thrive in the era of online retail.

By Alexandra Alter
May 1, 2019 The New York Times

Quote:
Indigo is experimenting with a new model, positioning itself as a “cultural department store” where customers who wander in to browse through books often end up lingering as they impulsively shop for cashmere slippers and crystal facial rollers, or a knife set to go with a new Paleo cookbook.

Over the past few years, Ms. Reisman has reinvented Indigo as a Goop-like, curated lifestyle brand, with sections devoted to food, health and wellness, and home décor.
