Thanks. I might actually stay there in the future. The backside definitely needs to be covered though.

Wow. Some really nice stuff at UBC. It isn't just the use of wood and glass either.

The Stephen Hotel doesn't live up to the renderings. I was expecting a glossier facade to make it pop more. This looks quite unattractive.

Studio Bell has an unsympathetic, overpowering form. The interior has some stunning spaces but other are overdone. Some are just confusing and others are restricting. I agree. The exhibits, themselves, aren't worth the time. Still, it's worth a visit until the library is built. That will blow this one out of the water. Hopefully, they offer more on the exhibit front by then.

UBC Okanagan looks nice, like a scaled-down version of the Vancouver campus.

The Mount Stephen is pretty cool. It looks massive...especially for a hotel at the higher end of the hospitality spectrum. Maybe Martin's photo just makes it look bigger than it is? The barren backside doesn't bother me at all, I like it when buildings are designed not to stand alone with no adjacent neighbours.

Yeah, the Mount Stephen looks like something you'd expect to see in Japan or some other such place with extreme attention to detail.

Batay-Csorba creates urban townhouses in Toronto faced with brick and wooden screens

Jenna McKnight | 18 April 2017

Canadian studio Batay-Csorba Architects has created a pair of slender residential buildings in central Toronto that pay heed to the craftsmanship found in the area's historic architecture.

Called Double Duplex, the building is located in Parkdale – a historic district dotted with Victorian and bay-and-gable-style mansions dating to the 19th century. The neighbourhood is popular among artists.

Superkül reserves upstairs just for kids at renovated modernist Toronto home

James Brillon | 22 April 2017

Toronto firm Superkül has renovated a mid-century modern home in a residential area of the city, adding a second level dedicated to spaces for children.

The Valley House is located in Hoggs Hollow, a neighbourhood in the north area of Toronto. The renovation and extension was intended to provide more space for a family of five without losing the modernist qualities of the existing home.

Aleph-Bau creates metal rooftop addition for slender Toronto townhouse

Jenna McKnight | 6 June 2017

Canadian studio Aleph-Bau has overhauled an urban residence in Toronto, creating a bright white facade and adding a sculptural rooftop volume wrapped in aluminium.

Called Twelve Tacoma, the home is located in the Summerhill neighbourhood in central Toronto. It is situated on a street lined with 19th-century workers' rowhouses known for their coloured brick facades and front porches.

Mindful of the project's context and working within strict zoning regulations, the team painted the townhouse white and added a rooftop extension clad in corrugated aluminium – resulting in "distinctly elegant" modifications to the traditional dwelling.

LAMAS builds contemporary Canadian farmhouse with reclaimed timber walls

Alyn Griffiths | 29 July 2017

The old agricultural buildings of Quebec informed this modern farmhouse near Montreal, which features walls of reclaimed wood, steeply pitched roofs and a secluded inner courtyard.

Called Townships Farmhouse, the property was designed by Toronto firm LAMAS for a working farm in the town of North Hatley, about an hour-and-a-half's drive east of Montreal and close to the border with Vermont.

Jenna McKnight

Canadian studio Batay-Csorba Architects has taken cues from traditional bay windows on Victorian homes for this residential building in Toronto, which has apertures that appear to be slanted.
