SOM's los angeles federal courthouse breaks ground
the los angeles federal courthouse designed by SOM has broken ground. the civic building is aiming for LEED platinum, as part of a greater municipal effort to construct environmentally efficient facilities. located in the city's downtown area, the 600,000 square foot building is slated to feature precedent-setting sustainable measures for american civic structures-- project leaders have even discussed the possibility of selling the previous courthouse to be refitted with community-building programming. the minimal form, dubbed 'the cube', will lend gravitas and significance to a formerly vacant lot in the city with a pleated, glazed skin.
EM2N draws from adolf loos for striped parisian social housing
part of the ‘réaménagement de la porte pouchet’ swiss architects EM2N has designed a remarkably striped apartment building in paris that draws from the adolf loos 1928 proposal for the josephine baker house. whereas with loos the horizontal stripes were to be made from black and white marble, expanded metal was used for the alternating design.

Consell Kindergarten is the extension of the School Complex “Bartomeu Ordines” in Consell, Mallorca (Spain). The new building is composed of: six classrooms (for children between 3 and 5 years old), one psychomotor classroom and a dining area including kitchen. The design strategy intends to accommodate the whole building area in the ground floor and thus create a fluid relation between the interior and the play grounds.

This interdisciplinary project of the new research pavilion is conducted by researchers of Institute for Computational Design (ICD) together with the Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE) at the University of Stuttgart. The pavilion is entirely robotically fabricated, from glass and carbon fiber composites and it investigates the eventual co-relation between bio-mimetic design strategies and new processes of robotic production. The new composite construction paradigm in architecture is rooted in morphological principles of arthropods’ exoskeletons.
Canberra's National Arboretum & Visitor Centre Protects 100 of the World's Endangered Trees

The National Arboretum Canberra just opened in February of 2013, and it will soon be home to 100 forests and 100 gardens dedicated to protecting and showcasing endangered flora. The arboretum and visitor center were designed and built by Tonkin Zulaikha Greer in collaboration with Taylor Cullity Lethlean, who took inspiration from the natural world, trees, leaves and the surrounding region.

coop himmelb(l)au will be designing a 120,000 square meter deep pit ice and snow world complex, complete with restaurants and hanging gardens. dubbed 'dawang mountain resort,' the building volume is integrated into a picturesque changsha landscape and positioned directly on top of a historical cement mining quarry pit and lake.
