Man, that's a small footprint, and it'll be two floors higher than their neighbors. Any renderings of this one?

Interestingly enough there was a different rendering on site than the one shown in the article. Only noticed it in a rush as I biked away.

1515 S. Lamar Blvd

Very slow project across the street.

That’s the one! It’s resting along the side of the site.

A better, larger rendering of Brodie Oaks courtesy of the developers and TOWERS

I did a quick and easy hike on the greenbelt recently and parked just down the hill from there at the trailhead. I was thinking how cool it would be to live in one of these in a more urban setting with the ability to walk to the greenbelt in about five minutes. Pretty cool location, really.

I don’t know how to post tweets here but best comment I’ve seen about this development is “this over and over and over is how the city builds the next gen of cool Austin places.”

Many many more like this please.

Yeah, I'm super excited about this. The height is fantastic for South Austin and all, but I'm most excited about a better use of that site and having the connectivity to the greenbelt and an open space/public greens. That would be a place I think I'd spend some time at.

The Domain, by comparison, just doesn't do it for me. I was up there a few days ago, and I still just am not crazy about it. I dislike the internal feel of it - being cut off from the city and without there actually be much in the way of open space to justify that. And it just feels too suburban even with the height. I don't know. I may end up feeling the same way about this - I'm more inclined to go downtown than be interested in something like Domain, but the open space with the Brodie Oaks development is really what has my attention.

Now if they would only give this same treatment to the shopping center on the east side of Lamar, directly across the street.

Literally every old skool shopping center in central Austin should consider doing this. At this point, the city's insane growth pretty much demands it.

EDIT: I wonder how real the buildings in that rendering actually are. Are we going to get that weird boxy silver thing right at the highway elbow? Or is it vaporware at this point?

Barton Creek Mall should get this kind of treatment.

Plenty of intersections throughout Austin could use this kind of treatment. S Congress and Oltorf for instance. And maybe even a little urban development within neighborhoods to create little downtown avenues like in San Francisco. First thing that pops into my head is 43rd st and Duval. I doubt the people living there would ever want it to happen but that little area can have much more going on in there. It doesn't necessarily have to be this hub of night life but the designs can be fitted to sustain more retail and still remain true to the neighborhood.

Barton Creek Mall's isolation with highways and single family neighborhoods on all sides makes it a poor candidate for this kind of density. There's simply no mass transit future in that area of town.

Yes, much of South/SW Austin is unfortunately isolated in the current infrastructure it sits with.... which isn't great considering it's proximity to dt.

That's not completely true, it might not be a good candidate for rail, but the CapMetro #30 bus already stops there. It goes through Rollingwood and down Walsh Tarlton Lane. It's not as isolated as some may think. Even so, the Barton Creek site is huge. I've often thought that it should also get this kind of density. If done with the proper mix, plenty of people could go on with much of their day to day lives on site without having to leave it.

Many of the other potential sites for redevelopment in south Austin are likely near already existing bus stops as well.

Would be nice for Simon to think about transforming this mall into a new future concept designed for the Gen Z/Alphas. Barton Creek Square is still basically a 1980s design where for example the Cityland Mall in Dubai has a park in the middle with stores and restaurants around it. People in Austin love the outdoors where even the new airport expansion will have a park.
