Bariloche: City Overview

Bariloche is a city in the province of Río Negro, Argentina, situated in the foothills of the Andes on the southern shores of Nahuel Huapi Lake. It is located within the Nahuel Huapi National Park. After development of extensive public works and Alpine-styled architecture, the city emerged in the 1930s and 1940s as a major tourism centre with skiing, trekking and mountaineering facilities. In addition, it has numerous restaurants, cafés, and chocolate shops. The city is very popular with Brazilians, Europeans and Israelis. One of the most popular activities is skiing, and most tourists visit Bariloche in winter (June–September). The city is also noted for its chocolates and Swiss-style architecture. Many high school students in Argentina take a senior trip to Bariloche, and the town is well prepared to host these kinds of groups.

Argentina is just an amazing country. The cities are absolutely gorgeous and Patagonia is just spectacular. The country surprises me at every turn. It should be on every traveler's bucket list.

Though it will not be in the following weeks, I'll be in Ushuaia in the summer (february), so I'll probably add it to the thread then.

Bariloche: Cathedral

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Nahuel Huapi is located at the intersection of Almirante O'Connor and Beschtedt streets, surrounded by two squares with beautiful gardens and corresponds to the Diocese of Bariloche. For its construction, the architect Alejandro Bustillo offered his project for free. His sentiment was oriented in a neogothic style with French reminiscences. It was built between 1942 and 1944. The stained glass windows were laid in 1947.

Bariloche: Railway Station

One of the main stations of the Tren Patagónico ("Patagonic Railway"), the Bariloche Station served in the past as one of the last stops from the train who came from Viedma, the city who was directly connect to Buenos Aires, in what was a trip who lasted almost a day. Built during the golden days of the rail network of Argentina, it currently stays operational.

Bariloche: Civic Center

The Bariloche Civic Center is a complex of buildings with a square in its core, built at the downtown of the city in 1940. Hosting several public institutions and museums, it serves nowadays as the postcard of Bariloche and it is a clear example of the architecture of the Patagonia, with dark-stone facades and light-brown wooden structures.

Bariloche: Bustillo Avenue

The Bustillo Avenue concentrates much of Bariloche's appeal outside its commercial heart around the Civic Center. Of several kilometers of extension, this avenue is practically a route and it serves as the door of the Cerro Otto (mountain), the Cerro Campanario, several of the most interesting coastal areas such as Playa Bonita and the Yacht Club, and finally the famous roundabout through which you enter to the imposing Hotel Llao Llao. In its first section of approximately 10 km, it is also a large continuous axis of medium and high level hotels.
