Shacks by the Stacks: Crappy shacks next to soaring skyscraper stacks.

There were two real shacks on (I think I recall) Notre-Dame West (or was it St-Antoine?) not that long ago, boarded up, some people wanted to save them, they were from ~1810, it generated a discussion about heritage preservation (which made the news, I read about it in La Presse at the time, I was a subscriber then). They're gone now though.

Much shackier than your example - which is a clearly urban type of construction.

Great examples. I knew there were some crapola shacks in the Griffintown environs but when I looked on Google street view, everything I found was being redeveloped.

Back in the early 80's I was often on this street and I always noticed this house as a hold out for the towers that were appearing and often thought it wouldn't be around for long

Griffintown used to have a few. It was really atmospheric to walk around there on a winter morning in the late '90s. I remember coming home from a party on the Plateau at dawn, walking all the way back to St-Henri, and Ann Street was just a canyon of looming relics under that cold bright sun. It might as well have been the Roman forum for me. That Montreal was really something, although of course the present one is much healthier.

Quebec City has no real CBD, so even though one can find shacks even near the heart of the city, it's not really possible to find this "shack in the shadow of great skyscrapers" effect there.

It's possible to find single-family residential very close to the center of the city, like that pink one there:

But you have to go further away to find classic detached SFHs.

Closest shacks to the city's core would likely be on the Lévis side.

Not fully detached but there's pretty shacky stuff at the bottom of the cliff (which was always a working class / poor neighborhood).
