Urban area is consider an area where population exceeds national average by at least 500%. I think this is the norm, not 100% sure. So any urban area can be considered small village with population of 3000, as long its area of village does not exceed 1sqkm or it can be small town of 10000, but again does not exceed area of 5sqkm...

I think this is the norm, not 100% sure.

Rural areas are where population meets national average or bellow.

Again you need to check this,

I hope others can enlighten us bit more, as I am also uncertain about these things and I'd like to know, lol

I remember lurking back a couple years ago and looking at maps of urbanized cities to scale comparisons made by SHiRO that were fantastic. Are these up anywhere?

Lets assume the national average is 10 inhabitants/km². That means any place with at least 50 inhabitants/km² would be considered urban?

Look at the definition of Urban area...

Any nation with 10 ppl per sqkm - urban area would be any small town with population exceeding 5000, Look at Iceland...

Someone called me?

Here are some of my maps.
I posted those I personally think are the most accurate.

Barcelona

Budapest

Amsterdam Deltametropolis

Hamburg

London

Paris

Prague

Rome

Stockholm

Vienna

Outside Europe:

Bangkok

Mexico City

Sao Paulo

Shanghai

Tehran

Los Angeles

If there are any request I'll gladly post other cities if I have a map ready made. Or maybe I need to pick this up again...?

How about the Rhein-Ruhr area, Istanbul, Moscow, Mumbai or the Yangtse River Delta (Shanghai, Nanjing, Suzhou, Wuxi,...)?

Rhein-Ruhr I once started on but never finished. It wasn't a particularly well detailed base map I was working from so it wouldn't have generated as good a result as the ones above anyway. Good maps are hard to come by and I'm more inclined to pick up the map making again if I encounter good maps showing all of the build up areas AND a scale. Lack of good source material is what made me stop doing these maps in the first place.

I do have Rhein-Main (Frankfurt) for you.

Istanbul. Rather detailed but too zoomed in...

Moscow. Overall a good map but I prefer a little more detail.

Mumbai. Good for size comparison, but lacks detail and doesn't show the greater area. This is basically just the build up area of Salsette Island (Mumbai, Thane), but not Navi Mumbai on the mainland.

Shanghai I have posted above, but not to the extend of showing a whole megalopolis. (in fact the Shanghai map is a bit too zoomed in , like the London one, I usually prefer to show more of the outlying area but good maps are hard to come by).

Some more of the requests.

Vienna (without Bratislava unfortunately)

Milan. Not one of my best. Looking for a better base map which also shows more of the surrounding metro area.

Unfortunately I don't have Zagreb, Ljubljana and Bologna.
