All BC/Vancouver. Check out what they did to the skyline. Do they show this commercial in Canada I wonder?

Not sure. Maybe that weird pyramid-like building they added is supposed to make it look more American?

Probably meant to make the city unidentifiable so people could relate to it better. Leave it up to the imagination of the viewer so it seems "closer to home".

Really interesting how they added the pryamid thing and removed canada place though. Goes to show how important that landmark is

Well going with what you stated in your comment, maybe Canada Place was too identifiably Vancouver so they removed it to make our skyline more generic for American audiences.

Really weird how they moved the Shangri La to the the lot where Burrard Building is located, and to which we know where the 700 foot tower can be built.

Matt Damon and Jodie Foster to shoot alien blockbuster in Vancouver this summer

BY KATYA HOLLOWAY, VANCOUVER SUN MAY 27, 2011 7:37 PM

VANCOUVER -- Hollywood superstars Matt Damon and Jodie Foster will be calling Vancouver home this summer while filming blockbuster alien flick, Elysium.

Foster, whose resume of big-screen hits includes Panic Room, Nell and Silence of the Lambs, will join thrill-chaser Damon (The Adjustment Bureau, The Bourne Identity) for filming in B.C., which is scheduled to take place from July 25 to Sept. 27.

According to internet movie database IMDB, the plot of Elysium goes like this: "Aliens come to earth to do battle with man kind so they find peace on earth and live like human beings."

Foster is said to play the head of the alien planet.

The movie, directed by District 9 director Neill Blomkamp, is scheduled to be released in 2013.

Here's a pretty cool Templeton Investments Ad that I saw on NBC during the French open. Kinda funny how they put a Mount-Baker-like mountain behind North Van.

We have a thread discussing that commercial here: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=191345

Shot in Vancouver. The outdoor sequences in the trailer should be fairly recognizable (esp Stanley Park, Granville St)..

I doubt in a movie like 50/50 they would focus on setting, unlike a movie series like Xmen where Vancouver filled in for San Fran.

It has started to annoy me that having countless films shot here we have never been able to play ourselves.

Calgary got to be Calgary in Cool Runnings, Montreal got to be Montreal in The Whole Nine Yards, Toronto got to be Toronto in Scott Pilgrim, all Vancouver has got is many references through cartoons and talk shows.

BC got a 30 second shout out in 2012, but that was it.

For example, the new final destination 5, would it really hurt them to simply have it take place in Vancouver and call it "The Lions Gate Bridge"?????? Especially after seeing in the trailer they have made no attempt at all to cover up the background.

Would having it take place in Vancouver really disenfranchise that many potential American customers????

I'll give you the Bruce Willis movie, something original, but for Cool Runnings Calgary has to be Calgary because the original story was on the olympics that happened there.
Scott Pilgrim movie was based on the comics which was based in Toronto.

There are a few movies that are set in Vancouver and filmed here, but we seem to attract more movies that largely follows stories done outside movies.
Like all those comic book movies, Xmen Fantastic Four, ect. are set on stories already written, and based in different places in the world.
As for Final Destination I know some governments don't like actual landmarks being destroyed and mentioned directly by name, so movie producers just simply expect the viewer to recognize the landmark.

Also Vancouver tends to be a substitute location because the movie is mostly filmed in a studio/stage lot based in Vancouver, when they move outside is when they have to substitute vancouver as another series.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filming...tute_locations

Just look at all the movies filmed here and what it is, either based on an existing series or too original not to care about setting.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...Vancouver_area

I don't get what's the big fuss of Vancouver not being Vancouver.

This is not true. Although it is rare, Vancouver has played itself on a number occasions throughout the years.

Off the top of my head, I can think of the following Hollywood movies:

Shoot To Kill (Sidney Poitier, Tom Berenger)
Narrow Margin (Gene Hackman, Anne Archer)
Are We There Yet? (Ice Cube)

Coincidently, a film festival called Vancouver Sometimes Plays Itself is currently being held at the Waldorf Hotel. It features ten rare but artistically ambitious films set in Vancouver from 1964 to 1988, including one directed by Robert Altman.

Here is the information: http://www.waldorfhotel.com/2011/04/...nnouncement-9/

Yes, we can find obscure examples for any city, how about this, I would love to see a mainstream film that has been released within the last decade that primarily takes place in Vancouver.

Again, Final Destination 5 using such a large landmark as the Lion's Gate Bridge as their entire inciting incident would be a good candidate to actually take place in Vancouver.
