The PA one used to be WWW.STATE.PA.US, one of the first so-called "Internet" plates. Now it's even more moronic visitPA.com

I've always liked these:

Easily the most simplistically beautiful state plate IMO:

I think I have to get new plates in the foreseeable future, and this is the first time I've ever been tempted to go with the specialty plates. The new ones look like they were designed using Clip Art.

You don't have to get new plates...just keep your old ones and get a new county tag. There are people that kept their 1970's plates still driving those white background ones.

I hate those plates. I haven't liked any OH plates since they had their bicentennial plates, with the Ohio logo to the side, and almost european looking numbering patterns. Then they went with that lame ass farm/sunburst thing, and, the new ones are just disgusting.

Few states really pull it off well.

Seems to me that most of the rural/country states have TERRIBLE designs (see the Kentucky sun example).

Going from this, I like only a few plates. The western states generally do alright.

My favorite plate that I've ever had was my DE plates. They're not pressed, so the plates are flat. Kinda cool.

You can thank Pennsylvania for that trend. We were the first state to do that.

ugh those are hideous plates.

but even if they were sharp and cool looking it wouldn't stop ohioans from insisting on puddling along under the speed limit in the left hand passing lane.

Wow... it seems like most states seem to be changing their plates every couple years these days... going from one crappy design to another. I miss classic plates like NY's Statue of Liberty, PA's blue and yellow plate, etc. Most states are going after these elaborate designs that feature multiple examples of state symbolism... and it just comes off really cheesy. Very few of the current plates have been around for more than a few years... and the old ones tend to be the best.

All websites should be removed... the internet is no longer a hip novelty. We assume your state has a website.

The following current plates are very good to excellent:

California
Colorado
District of Columbia
Hawaii
Maryland
New Hampshire
New Jersey
New Mexico
North Dakota
Oregon
and especially VERMONT (since 1985)

ohio had a nice clean green design on their classic plates too...much preferred!

i liked the simple red, white and blue striped ones ok too, but arrrgh this new style is really gawd awful -- hopefully it goes away soon!

what is it with this trend of overly busy and ugly plates? certainly the state highway patrols dont like them...?

Ahh, should be lyrics from that Pretenders' song: My city was gone. (Ay, Oh, Where to go, Ohio)

Its "Way to go, Ohio"

Just from random observation, most states jumped on the "We need gaudy plates!" bandwagon when states like Oregon and Idaho redesigned their plates in the late 80s/early 90s.

For some reason, Utah has always (well, not always, but for as long as I can remember) had two standard issue plate designs. You get to pick which one you want. These are the current offerings:

Which recently replaced these designs:

What I really dislike are the new plates that not only have wonky designs, but have stopped using raised letters and numbers. Some of them look like they were made on a bubblejet printer.

I saw one of these new Ohio plates today. I couldn't have been walking more than 20 feet from it, and I couldn't even come close to reading the state name. Simply a failure of design on all levels. The new Indiana plates are drab and aesthetically unbalanced, but are at least easy to read. These are hard to read and ugly.

It's interesting how "boringness" seems to be the false enemy in plate design. Plates don't need to be exciting. Clutter is the enemy (as well as cheap/cartoonish/airbrushed looks).

Plates I like:

These match almost any color of car nicely (except red). They looked great on my gray car.

Growing up we had these:

Points off for the website here. Put in a nice "The Keystone State" and we're good.

so much better than our current so-so one:
