just terrible.
glad you made out mostly ok. you must live in country club park.
that looks like 8th st.
i live about 1/2 mile away to the east.
you're right - that is a sycamore tree. glad it survived, tho i hate
to see it damaged. i love that specific tree, and i planted one
in my yard because of it.
Yep, that's 8th Street, in country club park. I actually live in Coronado, on 8th St south of Virginia.
It is true about the loss of the trees, there are so many big old trees that have fallen that are basically irreplacable in our lifetimes. We can plant more, but we'll never see them get that big.
Damn Phx31, impressive pics. My power wasn't restored until late Saturday afternoon, about 43 hours later. My neighbor was told by an APS repairman that our neighborhood wasn't a 'high priority' because there were only 47 customers without power.
At the height of the storm, there were 100,000 customers without power (both APS and SRP). The city of Tempe has declared this a "Limited Disaster"; I'm still trying to figure out what that means.
For everyone else wondering about the lack of news coverage regarding the storm, there are 3 reasons why:
1. The storm happened right after Obama's acceptance speech to the Convention.
2. Rumors of McCain's VP(ILF) pick came early the following morning.
3. Because the storm occurred late (around 9:00 - 10:00pm), Phoenix residents didn't really have a collective understanding of just how widespread and serious the damage was until the following morning.
I've got some more pics; will be posting shortly...
Yesterday I went over to the Sunset / Riverside district north of University Drive in Tempe (about 5 blocks from here). Walking around 5th street, I came across The Arbors apartment complex. Some of you may be familiar with this neighborhood for its' leafy, shade-filled landscape.
Well, at least it used to be like that.
Note the beer can (for scale comparison). There were some big trees felled in this storm.
Damn, Vertex, amazing pics. Some of those trees were huge. It really sucks to see them down. My friend used to live in that neighborhood back in college. I hope it's still tree-lined enough.
In regards to your power comments, I thought I was going to be without power for much longer than 48 hours. We had our power restored Saturday night at about 10pm, but aside from my immediate neighbor to the south, the rest of my street had their power back on a few hours after the storm. I thought I was going to be "the forgotten house" and be the very last house to get power back.
I am so late commenting on this thread, but here's my end:
I was house sitting all last week in South Scottsdale. We were just about done watching the Obama speech when we heard this weird loud noise that sounded like a airplane was coming through.
The winds were powerful and the lighting and thunder was incredible! I am surprised that the house I was sitting for wasn't damaged at all, and we were near Papago Park.
I have video of the storm, just haven't posted it yet. I'll get to it.
