I believe that intersection in the middle top of the photo is where Sunset, La Cienega and Miller Drive all intersect on the Sunset Strip.

Great photos, I really like the ones of the CBS building on Sunset. That building is now vacant, and has been for the past few years. I'm not sure what's planned for it, I'm hoping it won't be demolished.

I. N. Van Nuys house, SW corner of Spring and 7th, ca. 1902. Has Mrs. Van Nuys (on the porch) just connived with her lover (in the horseless carriage, leaving after a nooner) to bump off Mr. Van Nuys? "Straight down the line...."

As far as I know, the most recent plan for Columbia Square, from the people who own the land, is to develop hotels, condos, and office space around it.

Good grief, more glass. No wonder I like old L.A. Don't get me wrong,
DJM19--I appreciate seeing what's coming to Columbia Square. I just
wish it was something more like this:

Hollywood Blvd. and Vermont Ave., pedestrian safety zone for streetcar, 1937

USC archive[/QUOTE]

Looks like you can see Barnsdall Art Park (may have still been known as "Olive Hill" then) in the background; is this the side facing Hollywood blvd? It kind of looks like where the gates/parking lot are now. If that's correct, then the building in the photo isn't there anymore, but the foundations still are. The Hollyhock House still stands (and has been restored; they regularly give tours of it).

their website isn't incredibly informative, http://www.barnsdallartpark.com/ but the wikipedia article is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnsdall_Art_Park

Imagine that; a hill in Los Angeles (East Hollywood) that was allowed to remain standing!

Was alerted to this thread by @LAhistory on twitter, have been absorbed in it ever since. Great photos and info! Will definitely be checking back.

on second thought; we may be seeing the back of the guest house here (which is still there), and that would place this photo a tiny bit farther north; almost in what's now the rite-aid parking lot.

Welcome to the thread 'TheGriz'.

Interesting photo you posted.
When I lived in L.A., I was seldom in that area (east Hollywood).
One of the things I regret, is not taking the time to tour the Hollyhock House.

Again...welcome.

I love these pictures of the sidewalk around the Richfield Building--especially the second one, with the shadow of a semaphore signal.

Great pics, Gaylord! LA really was the place, wasn't it. It's a shame all of that is gone.

Walking around downtown LA, you can still see the names of old buildings in brass on the sidewalks here and there...

1st Street, Little Tokyo, 1941. Oh I see a before and after photo comparison written all over this one. ;-)

Photo was taken the day after the Pearl Harbor attack.

LAPL

Little Tokyo, 1942. The caption reads "Standing in the almost deserted 'Little Tokyo' Mrs. Jack Iwata surveys a typical sign for sale of an unneeded incendiary bomb spray gun in the rush to close out stock before evacuation." I know where this is located, this also begs for a before and after photo comparison.

USC Archive

Boarding buses for Santa Anita racetrack, 1942. The stables at Santa Anita were converted into temporary barracks to house the Japanese before being sent to Manzanar and the other relocation camps.

LAPL

Vacant 1st Street shops in Little Tokyo after the relocation. Little Tokyo would go through a period called "Bronzeville" during the duration of WWII.

Both photos from the LAPL

East Hollywood

Thanks Ethereal!

There are a lot of buildings this side of town that have been around since at least the 20s; will try and get some before/afters when things slow down a bit.

in the meantime, a little history about the area: http://easthollywood.net/history.html

Winnie Ruth Judd

Famous Arizona trunk murderess Winnie Ruth Judd--always
one of my favorite cases. I'd forgotten that L.A. figured into
the story. After dispatching two friends with whom she was
fighting (supposedly over a man), she packed up their remains
and left Phoenix for Los Angeles. Sharp-eyed (and -nosed)
baggage handlers in L.A. called the police, but La Judd took
off and was at large for a week before being arrested at (not
sure why) the Alvarez & Moore Funeral Chapel on Court
Street. She was extradited to Phoenix, where she stood
trial and was found guilty. The rest of her story is very
interesting--check it out.

Alvarez & Moore Funeral Chapel, Court St.

L.A. County Jail booking slip

The trunks--there are pictures on the internet of the contents, but I'll
let you find them yourselves (think Betty Short).

All photos LAPL
