The audacity of building a thick nearly 700-foot mixed use tower on top of an active train station in this country should be getting more attention. What an awesome project.

Audacious or practical? And this is the 2nd project in Boston on top of a rail station in the last 7 years or so. The Hub on Causeway opened in 2019-2022 over North Station and features a 38-story residential tower and 31-story office building anchored by Verizon that while not over 600 ft still adds a lot of density and anchors the northern end of the skyline.

Unfortunately, the residential there was supposed to be about 650' and got chopped down to 496'! The office tower (Verizon), on the other hand, grew from about 420' to actually getting built at 510'. It would have looked a lot better if the residential was built as originally planned, because now there are 4 towers too close in height that all kind of blob together. Technically, that area could accommodate ~800' on certain parcels, so maybe there's still hope. However, that hope is not today, and not in sight within the current building climate.

This is Boston's last awesome project for a while. Nothing over 500' is even in the pipeline. Cambridge will be doing the heavy lifting going forward, and that will be great including major new peaks in Kendall, but the top of the skyline will be the same for a while once SST is completed. Luckily, building is a cumulative thing, so all the new towers (including 5 over 600' which just doubled Boston's total to 10) will be around for all of us to enjoy going forward!

Actually 3 out of 5! Also missing: 1 Dalton, the best of them all.

All 5 are between good to great to transcendent. Boston has been very lucky after having been stagnant for so long.

A piece of metal formwork fell about 25 stories and got lodged on the 9th floor. Nobody was hurt but the city has ordered an immediate pause in construction. It shouldn't take too long but any delay is always a bummer.

I had to dig a bit but this chart is exactly what I was looking for:

California has the top EV share in the country (as of mid 2023) with 4.9%, and is somewhat of an outlier compared to the rest of the states. The first East Coast state doesn't show up until #10 Florida at 1.8%. The National Average is 1.6%, and Massachusetts comes in right below that, at #14 with 1.4% EV share.

Cold northern states have been slower to adopt because the cars aren't yet viewed as reliable enough for our winters.

It's cool that from that Savin Hill angle you can even see One Congress peeking through just a smidge (edit) oh and juxtaposed with the new HarbourVest signage on the former State Street headquarters at One Lincoln! This is one of those thousand-word photos
