[Dundas] Collins Hotel | ? | 2 fl | Restoration

Renovations at the Collins Hotel in Dundas continue through the winter
(Dundas Star, Debra Downey, Jan 7 2016)

The Collins Hotel is slowly returning to its former glory.

Extensive renovations have been underway since September at the downtown Dundas landmark at 33 King St. W., and just before Christmas, the new front facade was revealed when meshing surrounding the building was removed.

Windows and doors have been replaced and painted black, the balcony restored and red brick returned to the historically designated front facade.

Co-owner Art Solomon told the Dundas Star News in October that the building had been “bastardized to a degree with non-period additions.”

Solomon and co-owner Bernie Gerl are now determined to restore the landmark in a manner fitting its long and storied history in the Valley Town.

Built in 1840 by Irishman Bernard Collins, the hotel quickly became a well-known gathering spot, hosting both high-profile political and social affairs. It was not only a focal point of the community but also served as a well-known stop-over for weary travellers.

Architecturally, the Collins is distinctive for its four fluted columns and a series of dormers on the roof.

During the winter, the second storey will be completely gutted and refurbished into high-end apartments, said Solomon.

In the spring the owners plan to “put some love” into the patio, and the interior will blossom with old photos of the much-loved Valley Town landmark and Dundas memorabilia.

Solomon said the entire renovation project has given the co-owners a greater appreciation of both the building and its importance.

“It’s been a fun project, which has really developed our pride of ownership,” Solomon said at the time. “Through the process, we have also realized how very important this building is to Dundas.”
