"Washington Football Team" is glorious. I hope it remains that way forever.

That's the best explanation I've heard. Thanks.

It doesn't forgive the terrible logo. Should have stuck with the old one and remove the "Impact".

Why does North America have to take a copycat approach when that isn't necessarily our culture, though?

In the grand scheme of things it isn't a big deal... either you want to watch the team or you don't. But I would not be thrilled if a team I cheered for scrapped its identity on the basis of "tut tut, we know what's good for you"...

Agreed. I liked how the stripes and colours evoked Inter Milan, a very noble club.

JHikka's assertions about "all" clubs is false.

Europe is more of a mix, and you have plenty of clubs like Internazionale Milano, Olympique de Marseille, Red Star Beograd and Dynamo Moskva who have what resemble North American-style nicknames.

Good point. Not every overseas club is "[City name] FC". Yet it seems as though MLS won't be satisfied until all of their clubs have that name or some slight variation on it. It's lame.

And even so, Europe isn't "the world". And I say that as someone who is probably on the upper end in terms of Europhiles on this forum!

Many if not most pro sports teams in Latin America, Japan, Australia, etc. have nicknames just like they do in North America.

Because North American teams are trying to compete on a worldwide stage for talent. Montreal is trying to sign players from Europe, Africa, Asia...they need to present themselves as an equal footing to teams in all of these places as the best option for players to choose for their professional development.

CF Montreal is simply a cleaner way to present the team than Montreal Impact, just like how it would be cleaner for the Richmond Kickers or Rochester Rhinos to lose their corporate-branding nicknames officially.

Agreed on the crest, though. It's not great.

These clubs are few and far between. For the last two (Red Star and Dynamo), these were common names given to all Soviet clubs. You can find them in most post-Soviet countries, thereby not making them very unique.

I actually don't mind the new crest... I prefer the old one, but the new one is OK. I'm sure they will have some cool looking merch to come out of this.

The new crest wouldn't work well as a hockey logo splashed across someone's torso, but as a small soccer crest over the chest it will look fine.

I had forgotten about this. They did keep it but said they'll change it again soon in response to the backlash. They are taking fan input this time. I really think that's what Montreal is going to end up doing.

Honestly for every great new MLS logo there's a bad new MLS logo.
Minnesota? Great. Charlotte? Awful.
LAFC? Great. Nashville? Awful.
Austin? Great. Chicago rebrand? Meh.

Sacramento's branding is really great, though, probably partly because MLS didn't get their hands on it.

I guess that new CF Montréal logo could grow on me... eventually. It will take time.

From what I’ve seen so far, the reactions to the new logo are overwhelmingly negative.

Ya I think people are gonna say: "We're playing club foot this weekend" or "Final score TFC 2 Club Foot 1". And there will inevitably be some viral logos created showing a foot instead of the snowflake.

The more and more we discuss this, the more and more I think what a colossal failure. Worse than when their grounds crew painted the wrong size 18 yard box on the field right before the semis playoff game against TFC and delayed the start like 20 minutes or something.

Or just call the team Montreal.

I love it! Sounds like Montreal is getting a new dance club.
