Because North American teams are trying to compete on a worldwide stage for talent. Montreal is trying to sign players from Europe, Africa, Asia...they need to present themselves as an equal footing to teams in all of these places as the best option for players to choose for their professional development.
CF Montreal is simply a cleaner way to present the team than Montreal Impact, just like how it would be cleaner for the Richmond Kickers or Rochester Rhinos to lose their corporate-branding nicknames officially.
Agreed on the crest, though. It's not great.

These clubs are few and far between. For the last two (Red Star and Dynamo), these were common names given to all Soviet clubs. You can find them in most post-Soviet countries, thereby not making them very unique.
