Arizona

I was just looking at the weather channel website and it says it's 28 degrees in Northern and maybe even Central Arizona and here in Chicago it isn't that cold at the present time.

How can that be?

Northern and Central Arizona have substantially higher elevations than the relatively low and flat valley.

Flagstaff is at 6,910 feet--downtown Phoenix is at about 1,090'. Just outside the metro, you rapidly increase as you go north...Carefree, 35 miles out of downtown is at 2,370. It snowed there March of last year...

Well contrary to popular belief, Arizona isn't a giant desert. Arizona is one of the most diverse states in the nation when it comes to climates and landscapes. You can find nearly everything here except oceanside beaches or tundra.

For instance Flagstaff, Arizona is a college/ski town that often gets quite a bit of snow. Here's a picture:

Flagstaff (according to the interweb) gets an average of 110 inches of snow a year, areas of the North Rim Grand Canyon can get twice that! I'd be willing to bet on most days of the year, Flagstaff is colder than Chicago.

More fun facts:

Arizona has more pine trees than Massachusetts

Arizona has more mountains than Switzerland

Here are some more pictures of Arizona that those 'back East' probably wouldn't expect/belive:

Because lots of northern arizona is 9,000+ feet in elevation. Yeah Chicago is cold, but Arizona is not 2329847 miles of kitty litter like ignorance would lead one to believe.

I saw last summer it was over 60 degrees in Chicago, how can that be!?!?!

Gabe (If that is your name), I know you're just trying to be amusing ... I see you are into photography. You likely then may be familiar with a lovely magazine know as Arizona Highways. This publication has been around for decades and it's focus is to showcase the incredibly diverse beauty that is the Arizona landscape. Check it out as I bet you could find them at your local library. I trust you will be very impressed.

I'll make it a little easier ...here is a link to their web site with a page that has prints for sale. It has a nice variety of images, and not much kitty litter in the batch.

Vandercook is correct. There is alpine tundra at the tops of the San Fancisco Peaks.

I love the Flagstaff area. We drive that way when we visit my wife's family down in Phoenix, and it's my favorite part of the drive.

Here in the southern part of the state (Green Valley) at 3000 ft., there's snow on the mountains and in my front yard:

Well, not quite the snow in the front yard yet--that was a couple years ago--but it's forecasted to get down to 26 degrees tonight.

Colorado? Or Denver? Be es-specifico... Because one of them is on the verge of 5 Million and the other may take some time. Colorado does'nt need anymore tourists becoming residents, thanks! I for one appreciate this place not growing at an alarming rate!!! We will leave that up to Arizona and Nevada, we had our top growth in the USA experience in the 90's. Whew, glad that's over with... Although unfortunatly not entirely over with, this place is still growing, just not at the rate it was in the 90's thank god.
