The 49 coolest neighbourhoods in the world - Montreal and Vancouver make the cut

These lists are always highly debatable, but interesting none the less. There are lots of great nreighbourhoods listed for street view exploring.

Villeray - Montreal, and Mt. Pleasant - Vancouver are the only 2 Canadian neighbourhoods mentioned. Mt. Pleasant is a great neighbourhood, though I don't know if it belongs on a list with these more historic neighbourhoods.

Here's the top 10...

Nørrebro, Copenhagen
Andersonville, Chicago
Jongno 3-ga, Seoul
Leith, Edinburgh
Station Distrit, Vilnius
Chelsea, New York
Xi District, Budapest
Ngor, Dakar
Sai Kung, Hong Kong
Richmond, Melbourne

Isn't Fraser and Kingsway cooler than Mt Pleasant?

As for Ontario, the coolest 'nabes in cities I've been to this year: Walkerville (Windsor), Ottawa St (Hamilton), downtown Leamington (paradise if you like Mexican food), Summerhill (Toronto), Weller (Kingston)

Yeah I meant Main Street. I used to live on Main Street - got tired of walking that strip dozens of times every week. My brother really likes Fraser and King Edward area. If I ever moved back to Vancouer, I'd like to live in North Vancouver.

Apparently the 2 best in Canada are Mt. Pleasant and Villeray. Then go from there...

Nothing worthy of debate here. These lists are engineered to get the most eyes on the advertisement. Every region has representation despite slim pickings like the Dubai Marina making the list. A genuine list of the coolest 50 neighbourhoods would be a lot less global as lubricious as it would be to narrow it down from 10s of thousands of neighbourhoods and a 100,000 bakeries. My wish is that we stop falling for this shit.

^ For real. They don't even try to make these lists accurate. The goal is to drum up controversy and get links from local newspapers. Maybe get some bribes from realtors.

Thanks for posting the top ten, logan5. Saved a lot of us from the clickbait. These "somethingiest somethings in the world" lists are the worthlestest lists in the world.

Just looking at the top ten, they have huge districts like Richmond Vic. or District XI--even Norrebro--listed as neighbourhoods when they really aren't. Even if they were neighbourhoods, Richmond and District XI aren't even debatably the best parts of their own cities. Andersonville in Chicago isn't even a top-ten Chicago neighbourhood. Not even close. Chelsea is great if you're stinking rich, but cool? Eh.

It's such a shame, considering that everything else on the internet is so accurate. These lists are just fun to look at with eye rolls sometimes while trying to figure out the rationale or methodology, perhaps astrology could do better. You could just make your own list and justify it. However Mt Peasant is cool, I always tell the homeless people that.

Everyone knows these lists are highly suspect. Some areas there I've never heard of. Thought they might be worth checking out. Also strange that they picked Mt. Pleasant in Vancouver.

I remember when one or another of these publications ranked West Queen West as the second coolest neighbourhood in the world about a decade ago, and still to this day, inevitably 9/10 real estate listings in the neighbourhood will bring that up.

The TimeOut lists aren't bad though. I seem to end up defending them every time they come out, but it's really just a rotating list of some interesting neighbourhoods - there's not really anything more to read into it. It's somewhat useful as it may raise one's attention to some otherwise lesser-known areas that are worth checking out.

Price Albert didn't even make the top 49, so the list is obviously bogus.

Villeray in Montreal? It never was thought of as particularly cool...more down at the heels. Far from being the coolest neighborhood in central Montreal, let alone Canada.

I concur, and have done the same thing on more than one occasion. They actually do a decent job of highlighting interesting areas one may not readily know about. In terms of lists posted on SSP it's actually one of the better ones!

The name is a bit of a misnomer though - I get why they do it, but it would be helpful if it wasn't called the "coolest neighbourhoods" but rather just cool or interesting neighbourhoods worth checking out. A true list of the world's coolest neighbourhoods would actually be kinda boring as not much would change year over year.

Pretty funny. They show a picture of City Hall, which

1) Isn't in Mt Pleasant, and

2) has a criminally underused park space just North of the main building.

I like Mt Pleasant and spend a lot of time there, but it's not that cool. What's described in the blurb is almost laughable. Yaletown, Olympic Village, and the West End easily beat it out.

Olympic Village is alright, but it is a bit sterile. The West End and Mount Pleasant are fairly similar IMO. My. Pleasant has a lot of decent restaurants, and definitely a better night life than OV or Yaletown.

I didn't know about Leith and it's pretty interesting. Edinburgh has an unusual layout, with a port area and then a central district that's just a few km away and not on the water, and both are connected by blocks and blocks of great old stone buildings. It is up there on my list of places to visit.
