Convention Center to delay upriver development plan as coronavirus further hits finan

https://www.nola.com/news/coronaviru...8b94ec276.html

...The Convention Center had been scheduled to decide this month between three development companies vying to lead the conversion of 20 upriver acres into a mixture of residential, retail and entertainment venues. That decision had been postponed until May but now Leger said it will be delayed until an unspecified date in the future.

Leger said that the board had previously committed to a public process of deciding on the developer, which he said would be impossible in the current environment. He noted the technical difficulties they had on Tuesday to arrange the webinar meeting of the finance committee, which had delayed it by about an hour.

The entertainment district as well as a 1,200-room hotel development and a $557 million spending program to upgrade the Convention Center itself over the next five years, are part of a multi-billion-dollar plan to transform that part of the city and keep it competitive in the conventions market.

"My expectation would be that in coming weeks and months, as we transition into recovery mode, we can fully get focused on, one, the implementation of the five-year capital improvement plan, and then secondarily the upriver development portion, including the master development proposal process," Leger told the meeting.

Makes sense to do this until people can meet in person again. The master plan has time to come together since the hotel wont be open til 2024, and might be later now since superbowl may switch to 2025 anyways because of new 17 week season which puts mardi gras and superbowl same time so i think will go to 2025 anyways

^ What is the latest on the pedestrian park on Convention Center Blvd? Is the landscaping work continuing on that project or stalled?

Due to this current pandemic I’ve been thinking about the cities economy and the future of it. Does anyone know or have any answers or solutions to these questions?

When will the New Orleans-Baton Rouge metro become reality as well as the completion of the high speed rail?

How can the city and metro area work together to lure Fortune 500 & 1000 companies headquarters here as well as get major logistics(warehouse) and call centers in the metro
area?

Are our economic leaders and politicians being aggressive?

I can remember reading an article when the governor of Florida came here and talked to companies in the state to relocate and move their business to Florida. Can we get our leaders to do the same for our state, because we are losing our college graduates to our southern rivals that seem to be more aggressive then our leaders here in Louisiana. Specifically in the New Orleans- Baton Rouge region.

Since the contractor is Landis construction has paused. Most other construction sites are continuing at this time

Reading the press release and the new Board Leader... they believe this development is even more pressing now to help industry recover quickly.

Convention Center Discusses its Role in Post Covid-19 Economic Recovery

https://exhallnola.com/convention-ce...omic-recovery/

Michael Sawaya, President and General Manager of the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center stated “I firmly believe our first duty during these challenging times is to provide service to our community in its time of need, and to promote the public health and safety of our employees and the public at large. Additionally, the convention center will continue to play a major role as a driving force in the local economy, and will be a critical component to the economic recovery. Our plans to reinvest in our facilities and improve our competitive position is more important now than ever,” Sawaya said.

The Authority in 2018 approved a 5-year Capital Improvement Plan totaling over $500 million for the convention center, and is committed to making critical facility investments that solidifies its national competitiveness among the elite convention and meetings locations in the country. It will also include a plan for moving forward on a transformative upriver development, and the time for that discussion will be in the coming months. “When the Authority Board of Commissioners is able to resume regular meetings, I am committed to a fresh look at a dynamic multi-use upriver development that will include a meaningful opportunity for public input,” said Leger.
