I'm sure that mainland China is under evaluated since there's been so much construction in the past 10-20 years.

Most likely, the big gap between the high-rises count from the site I gave and your estimates are more related to what constitute a high-rise; the site I gave counts building over 90m tall. Here in Montreal, we have 30 storeys buildings that are under 90 m. In the document you posted (Magnitude and Extent of Six Years of Land Subsidence in Shanghai Revealed by JERS-1 SAR Data) they mentioned that out of those 7000 high-rises, only 5% are above 30 stories which would mean there were about 350 in 2005. Doesn't seem too far off reality when considering they now are counting 822 for 2012...

ah ok, thanks.

But Im not quite sure these pics, about the same scale? (going by the supertalls) add up still. Wish we had stats from the |Shanghai Urban Council, if they do ever count these things.

I thought they gave you a free game of your choice?

That's BS that they didn't give people a refund.

Tops out

World's second-tallest building tops out in Shanghai

The topping-out ceremony for the Gensler-designed Shanghai Tower, the world's second-tallest building, takes place in Shanghai tomorrow (Saturday).

The 632 metre-high tower has now reached its full height and is second only to the Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai, which measures 828 metres.

The topping-out ceremony, to be held at the construction site in the Lujiazui development zone in Shanghai, will be attended by Gensler founder Art Gensler and senior figures from the Chinese government.

The twisting form of the tower is the result of wind-tunnel tests and is designed to reduce wind load by 24% during typhoons.

The 121-storey tower will be divided into nine vertical zones, with retail at the bottom and hotels, cultural facilities and observation decks at the top. The zones in between will contain offices.

Shanghai Tower is due to open in 2014. It forms the centrepiece of the emerging Lujiazui high-rise district in Pudong, which is located on a bend of the Huangpu river opposite downtown Shanghai.

Yea the Chinese don't play around. How they build so fast I am yet to know. But this is good as this tower is just amazing.

OKee, going off a bit on a tangent here, but one of China's top attractions, Mt Huashan, where thousands go on the ancient pilgrimage route to the top - not for the faint hearted:

Accuracy Please

Why is it so difficult for people to report the ACCURATE FACTS and not just guess-work and assumptions? ...:

Quote:

NO...

The CORE has reached its full height. The building still has an ornamental Crown and parapet which extends well above this height and counts towards the building's official height of 632 meters.

See! Was that so difficult?

Sheesh!

Having climbed Huashan myself, I can tell you that you don't have to go on that narrow boardwalk to make it to the top (it's just a side attraction that doesn't really go anywhere) and that all of the steepest/most dangerous 'sky ladders' have been replaced with much less dangerous ones. It's still a fabulous experience (and one of the most beautiful places I've ever been) but it's not the dangerous place it used to be.

Here it is. Saturday, topping out. It reaches its highest point today. And a look into the motivations of builders. What a view of the big three btw. Also whoever wrote this article doesn't understand the meters to feet conversion lol.
==============

SHANGHAI, Aug 2 — Shanghai Tower, which will be China’s tallest building when it is completed in 2015, will reach its highest point tomorrow, adding to the country’s construction boom even as the economy slows.

The 632-meter (6,800-foot) Shanghai Tower in the city’s Pudong business hub is also set to be the world’s highest building after the 828-meter Burj Khalifa in Dubai, according to the Chicago-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. The 125-story Shanghai Tower, which broke ground in November 2008, will include offices, a luxury hotel and retail space, according to the developer, Shanghai Tower Construction and Development Co.

Competition to build the country’s skyline higher is continuing even as China’s economy slowed for a second quarter and Premier Li Keqiang reins in a credit boom. China completed 22 buildings higher than 200 meters last year, accounting for 33 per cent of the global number, more than any other country, according to the council on tall buildings.

The developer of Shanghai Tower will hold a topping out ceremony tomorrow to mark the building reaching its height.
