Lots of established chains have been failing, in Edmonton anyway, like Kelsey's, East Side Mario's, Red Robins, Chilis...Moxies seems to be shutting down in town too

I know St. Albert still has an East Side Mario's

Edmonton is lucky to have countless amazing local eateries, so why bother going to a chain when you have so much choice? The same can't be said for the smaller centres in the metro area, though each does have at least a couple great local spots, but not enough to push the chains out.

We often were the testbed for new to market chains and likely are (similar to retail) overbuilt and a rather saturated marketplace.

ESM is horrific.

Kelsey's - Awful
ESM - I'd rather eat dirt
Chili's - Only good because of the Office and a handful of items

Moxies is alright but had some bad locations.

Red Robin, now that is a tragedy. Sorely miss the whisky river chicken burger and milk shake.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not losing sleep over these losses. I grew up a suburban kid, so these chains were what we knew as culinary excellence. I've since tried to expand my horizons.

On the subject of restaurants, anyone out there have a recommendation for a good local spot that would be kid friendly? As in, has a kids menu? Getting tired of BP's, The Keg, etc. when we do decide to tempt fate and take the kids out to a restaurant

Yup all above are quite avoidable.

Did happen into Mr Mikes in Peace river and was pleasantly surprised.

I've only been to the Moxies in Grande Prairie last year and I thought the food was alright. There is a Moxies just outside of Kingsway Mall and another at BRBN St in WEM, so I wouldn't call them bad locations per se. Overall I wouldn't miss these chain restaurants if they closed as long as other restaurants are ready to take them over.

I haven't taken our kid there yet - but I've heard Otto is fantastic for kids. It's on our to-go list.

I live a 5 minute walk from Otto and it's truly a hidden gem. Very kid friendly for sure, though I don't have any of my own, but I do see them there quite often. Do try the currywurst!

Is Seoul Fried Chicken still opening on 104th street? I recall seeing signage up over the summer, but nothing since.

Otto, I have never been. But it has quite the beverage menu - and I love sausages and the other options. Going to add this to the list of places to eat while we are in town.

Read in the Tomato about Little Italy's Piazza Food Hall then found this:

Cool concept if they are able to find tenants.

Went for dinner at Dalla Zenari's then to a movie at Landmark ECC. Great to be back there.

I love this idea, I hope they can fill it up in a reasonable amount of time. Having that plaza full with some quality tenants would really help activate that corner to balance the busyness of the Italian Centre kitty corner.
