They do not need to invade Canada. They just need to claim some of our territorial waters, EEZ or uninhabited islands in the Arctic. If someone like Trump is President and he doesn't care about Canada or thinks he does not need to defend Canada because we don't pay our fair share of defense costs, what are we going to do about it if don't have any independent military capabilities?
NATO members only need to "render assistance" as they deem necessary. If all Russia is doing is claiming some seabed or tundra based on some weak legal theory, NATO members can offer limited assistance so they don't "provoke Putin". Anything is possible these days as we have seen recently.
