The project was delayed so long because the property and project were listed for sale that entire time-- it was purchased by Excel Group out of Arlington, VA in March 2019 so that's why we're seeing motion on it now.
A proposal for the site was first revealed in 2014, with the original plans calling for a 12-story building. This proposal was updated in 2017 with the design as it exists today. On the site, the coming soon signs for the building is still posted, but now the inside of the structure is nearly vacant.
I'd be surprised if this is still getting built as a hotel. Nobody is getting hotel financing right now. Maybe demo is just preemptive to avoid any preservation efforts?
Does anyone know the author's source for the article's claim that demolition activity is imminent? Has a permit been issued?
I still walk past here daily - the site has been in a "gutted" state for around a year with little to no apparent activity, and a small homeless encampment formed at the back loading dock since the summer. I wouldn't imagine that would be allowed to persist if this was about to become an active work zone.
This building was the original NFL films headquarters. It's a shame that nothing has happened with it still. This area is so unjustifiably dumpy and desolate. So many surface parking lots.

In 2014, plans to overbuild the historic structure for use as a hotel came to light. Details of the plans have shifted over time, but no significant work has happened on the site over the last six or seven years. The property ended up trading hands in March of 2019 for $4.5 million, which lead some to think that the hotel proposal was dead and that something else would be built instead.
It looks like the hotel plan is definitely still on. In January of this year, foundation permits were issued that specifically mention a 15-story hotel structure. Then, just yesterday, commercial building permits were issued for the “ERECTION OF A HIGH RISE BUILDING TO TIE INTO EXISTING HISTORICAL FACADE.” The permit mentions that the building will be 15 stories. It also looks like there will be some sort of ground floor lounge or restaurants space.
This area desperately needs this project. Maybe it could jump start some projects for the endless abyss of parking lots. Also this building is really cool and is the original headquarters of NFL Films.
