North and northwest Texas can get much colder and more frequently. Last night, parts of the Panhandle were below zero F. They sometimes have blizzards in the Panhandle. The mountains in West Texas can get good snows as well, but not consistently from winter to winter, as would be the case in the New Mexico and Colorado mountains.
It snowed at least once every year during the four years (1966-1970) I lived in Midland. We had a white Thanksgiving one year. One year we had a foot of sleet that turned into a solid sheet of ice.

Amarillo averages 17 inches of snow annually. It's average low temperature is below 30 degrees for 3 months of the year. The record low is -16°, and the record snowfall is 19" in a 24 hour period. The record snowfall for a year is 46". Amarillo is closer to Denver than it is to Austin.

Nashville skyline, courtesy of MLBrumby on urbanplanet.org... skyline extends out quite a ways to the left, but this gets the bulk of the CBD skyline... add about 40 towers of 10 stories and up (including a new 750 ft tallest currently U/C) to this in the next four to six years btw.

Sorry for the image size, didn't know how to make it smaller. This recent photo from Scott Taylor is a good example of how much Astra adds to the skyline from certain viewpoints. Yes Astra isn't perfect. The lower west and main north tower sections would've looked much better with the full window treatment. That said I still think it's a great addition to the skyline. I think it's going to be a very attractive tower from this angle once the glass and crown are complete. Worthington is also a great addition that makes a big impact from this viewpoint.
