Perhaps I was wrong. Forgetting Marine Land, you have given me the impression that you think London is somehow worse than any where else.

They are commercials trying to masquerade as something other than a commercial. Like they are some sort of public service announcment about detergent. I dont fully get why they exist?

Helping you buy better?

Oh right, you'd mentioned that in the past already (I recall finding it surprising; Anglos in Lévis aren't exactly common )

Even on the other shore, it doesn't take very long to hit neighborhoods that can compete with the best content (for this thread) that Milton and Laval have to offer. Charlesbourg (except for the tiny old core) is horrible, so is most of Beauport.

What sucks is, even the old core of QC could be better - there's shameful neglect and lack of interest in heritage even there. It's so discouraging it's even made me change my outlook a bit over the years (caring less about heritage preservation than I used to, now).

Quebec City only looks good because the rest of the country manages to be even more awful.

No no no, he hates Laval more than any where else and I can’t say I blame him

My family in Levis are not Anglos! One of my uncles married a Quebecoise gal from the region, way back in the early 70s. It may sound strange, but his English has lapsed greatly, and he and his family only speak French. His children (my cousins) are functionally bilingual but live out their lives in French. And my cousins' children have very poor English.

I recall Acajack's reaction when I mentioned my gf was Anglo (something along the lines of "une Anglo à Lévis?!? ça existe?!?").

Interestingly, the business in Lévis that hired her when she moved there was thrilled to find someone able to speak English decently, as they were regularly in contact with American suppliers and customers, and before that, their best guys were only a notch or two above "yes no toaster".

Seems crazy to me that anyone fluent in English and living in North America would let that lapse, wow. It's true that you don't need it if you live in "deep" Quebec, but still, not bothering to learn it (which I'd understand) isn't the same as having it and throwing it away.

I'll second what Acajack said, I'm actually not that surprised by what you said (the only somewhat surprising part is that your relative who married into Francophone Québécois actually then went and lost their English.)

I have said before that I can't remember not speaking English. Which means I learned it by the age of 3 or 4.

And yet, a couple of years after I moved to Quebec, I had a job where I almost never spoke English. It was all in French. My family and social life was also all in French.

And to my astonishment, I found that my English started to lapse a bit. Not totally, but I found myself searching for my words a lot.

My English also lapsed quite a bit during my six-month stints of parental leave when each of my kids was born. This was before my online SSP life so I barely used English at all during that time. Though on a passive level I was exposed via TV, movies and music, having to express myself beyond ordering food or giving the gas pump number in Ottawa was not something I had to do.

It was a bit of a shock going back to work and having to write or say something intelligent in English all of a sudden.

I have a cousin who was born in London (UK..not Molson's sprawlburbia Londonium) and lived there and in other parts of the UK until he was about 30. Around that age he married a lady from France and they moved to Paris soon after. He has lived there for about 22 years and his english is slipping. He speaks to his wife in french and english (she speaks english very well) and his kids can speak both. In his job he needs to speak french all day and he needs to write in french...his written english needs are not that extensive.

I noticed when he spoke with me sometimes his tenses were wrong and it was almost as if he was thinking of a sentence in french in his head and he translated it to english when he spoke to me. He was speaking to me about food and preparation and he forgot the english word and said the french words instead.

His sister who lives in London has noticed it as well.

I spent 6 weeks working for my cousin on Montreal's south shore when I was 16. By the end of that summer I thought and actually had dreams in french. I have also been told in adulthood by multiple people that I was talking in my sleep in french. Upon my return to Calgary at the end of that summer I almost had an accent and struggled a bit with english.

That’s going back a little ways. Did I post that here or in the dead malls thread? WalFart killed the Drumheller mall. It’s a nice time capsule. Situated right next to the cemetery too!

I've been in Quebec almost 20 years now. My parents out west tell me that sometimes I make mistakes with verb tense when I'm talking to them. I'm not doing it on purpose, I swear. Damn French family.
