One would think the University has plans to replace these residences almost simultaneously or ready to go... There has been significant pressure for on-campus residences and the University keeps growing every year.

I imagine closing Brooks (700 beds), Marchand (349) and Stanton (357) would create a significant loss of space (> 1,400 beds) and revenue.

The 2 or 3 private "off-campus" residences that have popped up are not enough to absorb the demand and those options, let's be honest, are much more expensive (a 1bed or studio is $1,600/month at the new Annexe building on Laurier).

Wow I knew about Brooks, but Stanton and Marchand? Those are big buildings, I can't wait to see the demolition!

I spoke to a new student today who said Thompson is also slated to go. That would really surprise me (and sadden me as I lived there in my first year)

And Leblanc , which is the smallest and oldest of them all will go sometime as well.

Yet, the university not only wants to replace these beds, but raise the total number under their management to 6000. How? I don't know but they do have plans as to how they will do it. Like everything else in the Master Plan they do not tell us how, or even where, until they are ready to put shovels in the ground.

Well, at the very least, three very tall towers sited at Brooks (with an equally large podium to house basic residence amenities and classroom space). As for the others along the canal side, not sure what the plan would be. Replacement with same same but taller?

Thompson has been on the chopping block for years, I'm surprised it's still standing.

Wow, I am surprised. Obviously, I was not in the know. I would say the the architecture of the universities in Ottawa, on average, is better than the average built form so I look forward to what they replace these with.

That might be the first time I've seen Carleton, home to the local architecture school, accused of having good architecture.

Some of their new buildings look pretty good. Definitely institutional architecture but better than the average crap going up around town (Andaz, CP1-99, Envie).

Shows how often I venture down to Carleton. Maybe not as good as the rendering, but pretty cool building IMO.

A one-liner in the 2030 Strategic Plan document may give us a clue about the Brooks site.

Develop a new Student Services Hub on Brooks site
Don't ask me as to exactly what that means. I have no info on this--perhaps another poster here has heard more details?

It is now being said that shovels for the new Athletic Facility on Mann Avenue, where the Sandy Hill Arena is, will not be in the ground before three to five years.

That is a few years more than the original proposed timeline.

I thought that the City was still in consultations with respect to which arenas it will close. Does this mean that Sandy Hill is a definite tear down?

uOttawa seems to think so, as they have spent a lot of time and money on plans to build there and are still talking like they will. Maybe they know something we do not.

Earlier in this thread we discussed that the university was planning to demolish the older residences such as Stanton , Marchand, Leblanc Thompson, starting as early as 2021.

Now I see that these four older "traditional " type residences are not going to be used this fall with a smaller cohort on campus and concerns about spreading the virus.

Could it be that some of them will never be used again?

The Fulcrum has an editorial discussing the problems with student residences in the Pandemic Era:
