Subsequent to the immolation of this impressive pile, the city constructed the beauty below which, as Matt pointed out, was followed by Hamilton's present day courthouse/ post office in 1930 at bottom.

While I would appreciate the original post office building if it had survived (and it would probably be among the oldest large public buildings in Ontario today) I do love what replaced it.

The new building from the 30's is one of my favourite buildings in the city. So grand, taking up an entire block.

As far as I know it never burned down, it was torn down at about the same time as the Capitol just up the street. They were the victims of the opening of the Jackson Square theatres.

You might also include Hamilton Place as a contributing factor in the demise of the Palace, Capitol, etc.

At the time they were just movie theatres not live venues so Hamilton place didn't really have much to do with it.

I was just a kid back then but I do remember the splendor of both of those theatres. it's a shame they are both gone.

ALEXANDRA ARCADE

This was a tough one. Some good guess but this building actually stood on James North in the block just north of old City Hall.

A much larger building, also known as the Arcade, took its place sometime later on the same block. This building would become Hamilton's first Eaton's seen at right of photo below.
