Toronto got off lucky. That Maryon Tower is hideous, and this is only a rendering.

Ah...the 50's when smoking and radioactive decay were recommended by 9 out of 10 physicians.

The Chicago Spire broke my heart.

Maybe it was a good thing the spire didn't happen. It would have looked ridiculous.

Shanghai Tower is much more elegant. The Spire looks like a drill bit.

I have mixed feeling about John Maryon. It would have dwarfed Toronto's skyline in much the same way that CN Tower did. Slowly Toronto has built up to the CN Tower to the point that it now looks integrated into the rest but I doubt Toronto could ever have properly integrated a big fat 686m building.

Even if Toronto built 10 buildings 300-500m tall in the downtown it would be massively bulkier and taller than anything else.

Tallest ever semi-seriously proposed in Phoenix was in the 1980s by Georges Schriqui--the "Phoenix Tower" would have been 114 stories and the tallest building in the world at the time at 1691 ft.

Never got seriously off the ground, as it was ruled a flight hazard by the FAA and talks with the City broke down over them wanting the developer to include City infrastructure improvements.

There have been a number of other proposals over the years more in the range of 600+ feet, but this is the tallest.

Schaumburg, IL (yes, that schaumburg) once had a fever-dream proposal for a 113 story / 1,300 FT tall skyscraper back in the late '60s.

it was to be the centerpiece of a massive mixed-use multi-tower development known as "Schaumburg Planet".

this grainy old newspaper scan is all that i can find of it on the web.

Helmut Jahn tower. Built in Philly and Chicago instead. But much shorter.

You're probably thinking of Two Prudential Plaza (2Pru) in Chicago.

Though it shares some similarities to that unbuilt houston tower, it is not a Jahn tower.

It was designed by the Chicago architecture firm Loebl Schlossman & Hackl and completed in 1990.

For Nashville it was the 1,030 Foot Signature Tower, which was supposedly just on the verge of starting when the damn recession of 2008 hit. Eventually the developer Tony Giaratanna built a tower in it's place, but it is much shorter and much less impressive looking. *sigh*... one day, we'll get that supertall.

This 305m pyramid scheme for Hamilton:

Would have been the tallest proper building in Canada. Definitely would have been visible from the CN tower.

2Pru is actually better looking than the the two Liberty Place buildings in Philly, especially 2LP. Better messing, proportions.

Rest his soul, Jahn really did have a thing for the Chrysler building.

I will have to respectfully disagree.

Not that I think 2Pru is a bad building or anything.

It's just that 1LP is one of my all-time favorite Po-Mo towers

I wish 1LP was taller; perhaps 1,100' or so.

Wow, that would have been so cool if it actually ended up looking like that, the design is so cyberpunk. Don't really like the PoMo bottom though.

A shame it didn't get built.
