I figured it was a faulty wikipedia quote. Sorry, I didn't mean to "shoot the messenger". Thanks for posting the photo of Toronto's tallest.

The Cathedral of Saint Paul (in St. Paul, MN) is 307' (I think it says 306.5' on the list) and, yes, the tower is the tallest part of the DC Basilica. Though I really think that tower and spire are just about interchangeable in the case of church architecture... but who knows how many different architectural interpretations of what constitutes what there are.

These look to be the tallest in Galveston. One was over 200 feet tall before it was damaged by the 1900 hurricane.

Galveston, Texas
Sacred Heart Catholic Church
1904

This building replaced another one that was built in 1892 and designed by Nicholas Clayton. That building was destroyed by the 1900 Hurricane.

This was the 1892 church that was destroyed during the 1900 Hurricane.

Built 1848

This is the oldest surviving church building in Galveston.

Galveston, Texas
Saint Patrick Roman Catholic Church
Built 1870

From Flickr:

Circa 1870. Partially destroyed by 1900 Hurricane. Bell tower was originally over 200 feet tall.

During the grade raising that occured after the 1900 storm, the whole church -- all 3,000 tons -- was jacked up 5 feet and underneath was filled in with dirt.

Yes, they are indeed... and they are also quite far from the Western Hemisphere.

hmmm... well... officially speaking, not really, since the western hemisphere line crosses over Greenwich, France and eastern Spain.

The Manizales Cathedral, in Colombia, also seems to be pretty tall. Check its height compared to the buildings around (edit: 112m according to Wikipedia)

on the Wikipedia page about La Plata Cathedral, I found this

I really doubt the data is right, but now we have some more western hemisphere churches to look for!!

edit: just to inform, found the Wikipedia page on the São João Batista Cathedral, in Santa Cruz do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It informs the towers are 86 meters tall.
