Anderson, SC - Radio's town, another nicely preserved old town

population 25,000, MSA 166,000...and part of the Upstate SC sprawlopolis of Anderson-Greenville-Spartanburg. the economy's shifting from textile production to more modern production (BMW, plastics, etc...)

if you've seen the movie "Radio," this is the town...although his new nickname is apparently "Stereo" since the movie came out.

anyway, i liked Anderson's preservation and small city/big town charm.

Nice photo thread of another interesting, small, South Carolina town! Just brings back a lot of memories for me, though... (For those who have been around SSP for a while, you may know that my mom passed away about a year and a half ago, and is buried at the cemetary just outside of Anderson. )

thanks y'all.

yeah, Spurrier got lucky...that's what makes the victory so sweet. after years of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, Clemson now truely knows how it feels to lose pitifully.

glowrock, i offer my condolences again.

public art contest...lots of cities do them. Knoxville has had bears and hound dogs; Columbia had palmetto trees and doors from a demolished housing project...feel free to mention any others.

p.s. while channel surfing, i saw that Radio was on.

What an elegant small town. Too bad some of the buildings look abandoned and unkept. But the rest of the town seems to be holding itself up with pride.

Thx for this view of small towns in SC.

Love you photos. Especially the one of the fish with the church painting, with the actual church in the background. Brilliant work.

Most of those pics are red x's for me but the pics I can see look very nice. I've actually never been through most of Anderson. As a current Clemson student I mostly stick around the hideous sprawling area near I-85 to shop at BestBuy and occasssionally go see a movie. I can only see pics 1-4...is that building with the clock on it located on Clemson Blvd.? I remember looking for a store for awhile and accidentally stumbling into an area that actually looked nice instead of the usual sprawling crap that plagues the area.

So I don't get it Clemson is in Anderson or is it Anderson University?? Is Clemson a private school? The lake looks really nice especially with the mountains in the background. I heard there is good wakeboarding there

Anderson University is private; Clemson is in Clemson and is public.

try refresh if they're not showing...

from Clemson Blvd, just head away from 85 towards downtown and the university. there's not a lot a whole lot of stuff there besides nice buildings, but it's more fun to walk around than the sprawl.

p.s. Go Cocks!!!

yeah, unfortunately most of the new development's out towards the sprawl, but given the smaller size of Anderson, i was suprised to see how many condos were being converted downtown...and not really cheap either. maybe for wealthy Clemson alum and downtown lawyers (there's a lot in Anderson.)

btw, that's the old city hall in the pic.

Anderson has a very pleasant downtown with a beautiful old housing stock. Unfortunately, most people never get to see it as they never go past the awfulness that is Clemson Blvd. When I was a young'un, probably 15-20 years ago, the Anderson Mall was at the outer-outer edge of town. The offices, stores and such really didn't start until you reached Dunkin' Donuts. These days "Anderson" basically sprawls out to Sandy Springs.

Oh, and thanks for the pictures. I noticed that while you took a few of the great old County Courthouse shots of the new one are conspicuously missing.
